Elderly or people with disabilities make it very difficult to move both on the street and around the house. We have the opportunity to help them and facilitate their lives. For this purpose, a lot of devices have been invented, so that such people can live a full, maximum independent life. This article provides examples of devices that will help you safely and comfortably perform daily procedures.

Bathroom for the elderly and disabled

To bathe people with disabilities is very inconvenient, not only to you, but also to the patient. For such people, special baths with a door are invented. They are available for both sitting and lying position. Such plumbing is absolutely safe for everyone: the door is hermetic, it controls the capacity of the tank, and the body can have handrails for ease of use and movement of the person.

Bath with door

In addition, such models can be equipped with hydromassage, water heater, backlight. This bath stylishly looks in the interior in the style of hi-tech and is suitable for use by absolutely healthy people.

Attention! Do not be afraid that during the reception of water procedures, the door may open. It will open only after the water has completely merged.

There are also special baths for disabled wheelchair users with a change-over capacity. An empty bath is tilted, a person is brought to her, which is transplanted into it by means of handrails. When the water turns on, the bath starts to level off. After the water procedures are over, the water is drained and the bath returns to its original position.

Advice! Acquire a bathroom with hydromassage function, it not only acts relaxing, but also has a healing effect: it prevents the formation of pressure sores, improves blood circulation, reduces spasmolytic pain.

Special lifts for the disabled

For people with disabilities and their relatives, moving around the house is a problem. Even routine daily operations, getting out of bed or taking hygienic procedures, can become a real problem, especially if there is not a person near by who can raise the patient. For this purpose special hoists were invented.

Mobile Lift

There are ceiling lifts, but the most convenient ones are mobile. They are equipped with a special cradle in which a person is placed and transferred to the right place. If the patient can keep on his feet, but is limited in movement, there is an option to carry him on this device.

Handrails

To facilitate the lives of the elderly and people with disabilities, you need to install special handrails throughout the house. They help a person to pull up or reach the desired object, and also perform the role of a kind of simulator. They are made of metal and plastic compounds, which can withstand heavy loads. In addition, they are covered with a special compound, so that they do not slip when grasped by hands.

Equipped handrails

Depending on the installation area, the following types of handrails can be distinguished:

  • rotary;
  • folding;
  • stationary.

Be sure to leave room to move the person

When installing them, it is necessary that there is enough room for movement, the patient should be able to independently move to the desired location.

Advice! When buying handrails, pay attention to their diameter. Usually they are released in size 2.5-3.5 cm. The diameter of the handles should be comfortable with girth.

Chairs for taking water procedures

For a comfortable reception of a bath or a shower for the elderly, there are special seats for the bathroom. In addition, people with disabilities can be secured in such chair (armchair) to prevent injury. They can be stationary and removable, swivel, but models have rubber lining on the legs, for safe use. Some high chairs are equipped with a hygienic neckline and a place for fixing hands on the sides.

Advice! The toilet bowl must be installed in such a way that a stroller or a lift can freely approach it from either side.

The acquisition of special accessories for the elderly and disabled is a must for those who care for such people. First of all, you make life easier for them and help yourself. Even a minimal set of the above listed devices will allow you to safely and comfortably move around the apartment and perform various manipulations.

Interiors with beds on the mezzanine, with hammocks and bar stools ... The average resident of the apartments that we admire on the Net is an adult healthy person with a good income and, most likely, without children. Meanwhile, there are many people with special needs, for whom a thoughtful interior is not just a whim but a necessity. It is about the disabled, in particular - about people in wheelchairs.

According to the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, today in Russia there are 12.9 million people with disabilities, and this is almost every tenth. We hardly see them: the cities, unfortunately, are not adapted for people with disabilities, so they try to leave the house less often. The problem can be solved by changing the town-planning norms and requirements, but this is not an easy task. But to make the disabled comfortable living in their own home is quite realistic.

On the project " Kitchen-dining room for wheelchair users   ", Participating in the contest" Kitchen in modern style" on the portal PinWin   , we came across almost by accident, and immediately decided to contact its author.

It turned out that the kitchen represented in the contest is part of the whole apartment project for the person in the stroller. The project was developed by the sisters Elena and Natalia Koziny, students of the Faculty of Architecture of the South Ural State University (Chelyabinsk). Despite the fact that the girls will finish their studies only this year, they already work as freelancers, actively promote the ideas of an environmentally friendly environment and participate in contests for the adaptation of the environment for all population groups. Elena says that she took up this project because she is sure: the creation of a modern comfortable dwelling that meets the basic requirements of disabled people moving by wheelchairs is one of the most important social tasks.

The project put before the girls a non-trivial task: it was necessary to create individual furniture, think over the placement of home appliances, leave space for free movement, and at the same time make housing a beautiful one. It was necessary to plan four rooms: a kitchen-living room with a dining room, a bedroom with a working area, a bathroom and a hallway.

Entrance hall

In order for the person in the wheelchair to be comfortable, you have to think through every little thing. Thus, the hangers in the hallway are located at an altitude of 150-160 cm.

Bedroom and work area

The bed was decided to make the same height as the wheelchair. It is equipped with a handrail, a special head restraint and a L-shaped bracket with a soft loop, leaning on which, the person will sit down.

"The bed has several options for transformation. Under the back there are electric motors with reducers, kinematically connecting the corresponding elements. In an additional soft element is an electric heater with a thermostat, as well as built-in vibro massagers inside each module, "says Elena.

The bed also has a mobile work surface that allows you to read, eat, take medicine and work without moving around the table.

Kitchen

Completely equipped with household appliances kitchen required special attention of designers. The working surface was decided to be located at an altitude of 85 cm, the lower storage tanks (on sliding rails with closers and the opening system from pressure) - at a height of 22 cm. Easy access to the plate and sink provided by a large space below them.

The upper cabinets are equipped with a device on pneumatic elevators: when a large working surface is required, they are lifted using the control panel of the Smart House system to the lower shelf of the lower cabinet - 135 cm, and when one of the lockers needs to be used, the locker goes down to the same level 115 cm. At the same time the mixer of the sink is pushed to the maximum level downwards. Lockers are opened upward with pressure and at any level when closed, they remain in the same position.

In the dining room for guests there are easily movable chairs and a place to move a person in a stroller. From the kitchen you can go to the loggia, where there is also enough room for maneuvers.

Bathroom

In the combined bathroom - a spacious shower with a tray at the floor level and a seat with handrails. Under the sink there is a large space so that you can approach it. The toilet seat with seat is located at the height of a wheelchair, and special handrails help him to change seats.

Smart House

Theoretically, now people with disabilities can live much more comfortably than before: technologies develop and penetrate into everyday life. In the project of a house for a person in a wheelchair, all the furniture of the apartment, engineering and lighting communications, as well as household appliances in the apartment are managed by the "Smart House" system. Touch screens located in all zones and the remote control attached to the wheelchair of the disabled person are designed so that he can use everything himself without outside assistance. Unfortunately, reality makes its own adjustments.

"I would say that many people, even the majority, can not afford the" Smart House "system, but the design task was to make the interior as comfortable as possible so that the disabled person could serve himself," says Elena. - Some functions of the "Smart House" system can be implemented in economy projects, for example, the systematization of all household appliances and switches in one remote control. "

Features of the layout

"The width of the doorways is of primary importance," says Elena. - For a wheelchair to be able to pass from one room to another without obstacles, in the project their width is 100 cm, and the doors are installed sliding, with a "pocket". It is important to remember that when designing a space, you need to take into account not only the width of the stroller, but also the place necessary to turn on it - 140 cm.

Unfortunately, not all houses are suitable for creating a comfortable home for disabled people, and this is a problem that has yet to be solved. "This applies both to houses built before the 21st century, and to new houses. But there are already houses in which the layout meets the standards and can be designed for disabled wheelchair users, "says Elena.

Finishing materials and other details

"All materials of furnish and furniture in the apartment meet such requirements as impact resistance, minimization of angles, safety, environmental friendliness, and also the exclusion of slippery surfaces," the authors of the project emphasize. All handles in the interior are D-shaped, so that even a person with limb disabilities can grab onto them. Seats (toilet, sitting in the shower, bed, sofa) are equipped with handrails so that they can be moved on them.

Implementation

The project presented at PinWin is conceptual, but it is quite possible to implement it. "The cost of implementing the project varies depending on the cost of furniture and the" Smart Home "system. In any case, the project will pay for itself by saving electricity, water and heat, "say its creators.

"For us, as architects-designers, it is important to promote the idea of creating an accessible environment not only in the city and public buildings, but also in individual residential buildings, as well as apartments, since most of the time people with disabilities, most often, spend at home. We plan to design interiors of residential and public buildings, furniture, individual objects of everyday life and the urban environment adapted to the needs of low-mobility groups of the population, "Elena says.

"The introduction of such projects into the residential environment will help erase the boundaries between healthy people and people with disabilities, create a comfortable atmosphere for life, work and socialization."

Fortunately, the enthusiasm of the girls is not without attention - they already have real orders for an affordable environment, in particular, they are now designing furniture for the blind-deaf and are planning to create an interior for people with such characteristics.

Unfortunately, many people have health problems. Some of them may face a lack of certain physical abilities. We will not list the reasons why a person can become an invalid, but it is better to talk about the requirements for a bathroom for disabled people.

  • 1 Requirements for a bathroom and a house
  • 2 Bathroom equipment
    • 2.1 Lifts
    • 2.2 Handrails
    • 2.3 Steps
    • 2.4 Chairs

Requirements for the bathroom and the house

When arranging a bathroom for the disabled, you should consider compliance with certain requirements. They will make it equally convenient to use a bathroom for each of the family members.

  1. Disabled people should have an organized private space, so they need to allocate a room closest to the bathroom.
  2. Take into account the peculiarities of problems that people have. Someone has aching legs, others have arms, back. All this affects the installation of a particular equipment.
  3. The house and the bathroom itself should be freed as much as possible from everything superfluous. Take care of providing free space, so that a person can safely move on it.
  4. From the point of view of rationality, it is best for a disabled person to use a combined bathroom.
  5. The area of the room plays an important role. As practice shows, the optimal size is 2.3 by 2.3 meters.
  6. Warning systems, switches, sockets and other equipment should be located at a level so that the disabled person can reach them if necessary. In addition, it is necessary to provide certain warning systems in the bathroom if a person falls and can not rise independently.
  7. In the bathroom should be present at least a wash basin, toilet, shower.
  8. Bathroom can be an insurmountable obstacle due to high boards. Because it is better to choose a shower cabin, and without a pallet. It should be placed as close to the toilet as possible.
  9. If a person moves exclusively on a wheelchair, the bathroom should be equipped with an open shower, so that you can go there. Therefore, the doors need to be made according to the width of the stroller.
  10. The minimum size of the shower is 1.4 by 1.4 meters.
  11. The installation of handrails around the perimeter of the premises necessary to facilitate the implementation of routine procedures should be provided without fail. Mounting them should be as reliable as possible, the handles are not slippery, and their diameter is the most convenient for grasping. That is about 25-33 millimeters.
  12. The toilet should be installed in such a way that the person with a disability can come to him in the stroller or come up from either side (left or right).
  13. The best planning for wheelchair users is the possibility of entering the building without having to turn around, and also from the entrance, approaching the toilet and bathroom from the side.
  14. Take care of the lighting. It is very important for a disabled person to see everything well. In addition, all switches should be located on an accessible person with limited capacity and at easily accessible places of the wall (not behind cabinets, shelves, etc., when you have to reach for a switch).

Bathroom equipment

When it comes to equipping a bathroom for a disabled person, certain equipment will be useful, facilitating the implementation of everyday hygienic issues. Of course, all types of equipment may not be needed, but with the help of the disabled it will really become a little easier.

Today, the development in this direction has made a big step forward. As a result, people with disabilities are able to access a variety of systems and mechanisms designed to equip the bathroom:

  • Lifts;
  • Chairs;
  • Handrails;
  • Steps.

We'll talk about these components separately.

Lifts

The lift can be called one of the main attributes of a person who, due to illness or injury, can not walk, it is difficult for him to climb. They are actively used by people who have suffered serious injuries, athletes during rehabilitation and so on.

The task of the lift is to lift a person from a stroller or even from a bed, if he can not rise on his own, then lower him into the bowl where the invalid takes a bath and will take care of his own hygiene.   Independently, or with the help of relatives. As you understand, not everyone is able to physically lift another person. And it's extremely difficult to deal with this every day. Because the lift can be called an indispensable device.

There are both simple models and modernized ones, capable of turning, programming and performing a number of additional tasks. Of course, the level of modernization has a direct impact on cost.

Handrails

Handrails perform a very important task when arranging the bathroom. With their help, a disabled person can independently climb, reach for certain objects. Plus, the handrails play a useful role in terms of improving the physical shape of a person, help in speeding up the recovery process, letting go unchecked.

Make handrails from metal, or combined materials. Equip them with a bathroom should be as necessary, depending on the characteristics of a person's illness.

Steps

Steps designed for disabled people are needed to simplify the process of overcoming the side of the bathroom.

As a rule, steps are installed together with handrails, thereby ensuring comfortable and safe movement to people.   As a replacement for the steps you can pay attention to special bathrooms, where there is a side door. Alas, they are too expensive, and it is not so easy to find them. Because most people have to stop their choice on the steps.

Chairs

There are special seats, more precisely lining for standard toilet bowls, which allow older people and disabled people to use the bathroom more comfortably. However, now you can install and special seats, even high-grade armchairs.

Such furniture for disabled people combines two devices in one bottle, as they say. With the help of such chairs for the disabled provides excellent comfort, fixing the body, thereby preventing injuries, damage, accidental falls and so on.

Choosing chairs or chairs for people with disabilities should be strictly individual. This applies to the rest of the equipment intended for such people.

As you can see, there are many ways to simplify a person with an ailment. The most important thing is to pick up everything correctly, in accordance with the peculiarities of diseases, the possibilities of a person to use this or that device.

Of course, you will hardly find such a simple plumbing store. Equipment for equipping sanitaryware for the needs of disabled people is offered by specialized shops, companies whose branches are not in every city. Especially if you live in a small town or village.

Nevertheless, it is not worth worrying about this. The delivery of the company is exactly carried out. Plus, it will not be superfluous to contact specialists who will help you make the most of your purchased devices. After all, it is important not only their availability in the plumbing room, but also a competent installation at the correct distance, height and so on.

Scientific research about human life, materials in the media, as well as our own daily observations, show that our society is aging in an unavoidable way. Outgoing years affect not only us, but also the space in which we live. The passage of time changes the functional needs of a person, requiring the facilitation of everyday life. therefore bathroom for elderly people   should differ from the usual and fully correspond to their capabilities.

The bathroom is one of the most demanding in the arrangement of the premises in the house, especially if it is intended for use by the elderly or disabled. In this case, the question is important how to equip a bathroom for the elderly, creating full functionality and maximum security? The following information will draw your attention to the most important points in organizing a bath for the elderly and disabled.

The bathroom for the elderly or people with disabilities should be free of any interior barriers. That is, it must be organized maximum possible freedom of movement. To the mandatory barriers can be attributed all the doors of different designs. To the optional - thresholds, floor level differences, floor connecting bars, decorative protrusions. In a word, this is all that hinders or restricts free movement.

Another type of restrictions refers to the convenience and freedom to use the basic appliances of the bathroom. Restrictions are that they are not adapted to the needs of the elderly and disabled, that is, there is no   freedom of use of devices. For example: a toilet with a low level of accommodation; high or low-mounted sink; a small-sized mixer with a short spout or a mixer with a tight swivel mechanism; possibly too large or deep bath with high sides.

Freedom of movement and use is a huge advantage of premises with a large area

Even in the smallest room, the possibility of maximum mobility is important. If we want to adapt the bathroom to the needs of the elderly or disabled, space is a fundamental and absolute necessity.

Solve the issue from the beginning. If there is a constructive possibility, the doorway should be maximally expanded. The minimum width of the doorway, which should not be limited to the door leaf, is 90 cm.

When installing or replacing equipment in the bathroom, it is necessary to leave enough space from it to the wall or other device. For comfortable access of users of a wheelchair the size of the minimum space is 150 cm in diameter.

2. Recommendations for the installation of equipment: sink, toilet, shower, bath

  Washbasin

Shells for people who move in wheelchairs should be installed in such a way that they can not only freely approach them, but also wash themselves comfortably. Leave the accepted standards aside and adjust the level of attachment of the sink to a particular person.

The washbasin is mounted on a comfortable level for a specific person

It is this approach, like installation of a sink for a particular person, seems most appropriate. Every 5 cm can determine and decide something. Someone has a backache, someone is hard to stand, someone has a big height or vice versa. Very close to, or directly above the sink, it is good to install a comfortable shelf, making available all the necessary items and appliances. Single or double handrails will also be desirable and the wave is appropriate even in the aesthetic sense.

Toilet bowl for a person with disabilities

European standards set recommended norms for fixing the toilet bowl when used by people with disabilities and the elderly. The toilet should be mounted at an altitude of 450-500 mm at the top edge of the floor level. Directly in front of him should be a free space with a minimum size of 60 × 90 cm, for those who move independently, and 150 × 150 cm, for people in a wheelchair, giving them the possibility of not hampered natural movement.

Bathroom for the elderly: toilet bowl and additional items installed according to the developed recommendations

What to choose: a bathroom or a shower?

What is better for installation, what equipment for washing the body? Without a shadow of doubt and hesitation, of course, this is a shower. And for this statement there are several good reasons.

Advantages of the shower and which shower is better

In addition to the fact that the shower is preferable to the bath, it should be noted that the best option   Shower arrangements - showers without shower tray with a drain in the floor. This allows you to get rid of the problem of uncomfortable stepping over the edge of the shower tray, because the level of the floor does not match the floor level. Many, when choosing such a sewage disposal organization, are concerned about the possibility of water flowing through the floor insulation. Read the information on how to avoid possible troubles, and your doubts will disperse.

Shower without pallet and restricting walls - ideal for comfortable showering

The lack of walls and a sill in the shower, minimizes the chance of losing balance and falling. This constructive solution   gives additional space to the room, and provides a great opportunity for free movement.

A large shower without bows allows direct access to it on a wheelchair

This organization of the shower allows you to remove certain restrictions, for example, in cases where the assistance of another person is required during bathing. And this, at first glance, is not a significant advantage is a real plus in everyday life.

Bath for the elderly

Bath, in contrast to the shower, is less adapted to the needs of the elderly. However, this is the reality that in the majority of apartments are traditionally installed not showers, but baths. When using the bath, additional problems appear, directly related to its design features. They are especially noticeable when entering or leaving the building. For people with a low level of physical ability, it is sometimes difficult to get out even from not deep baths.

A sitting bathroom with a door for the elderly does not take up much space and is a worthy alternative to a shower cubicle

If in the process of repair or new construction, you chose the bathtub rather than the shower, pay attention to special models for the elderly   and people with disabilities. The presence of a door and a large built-in seat is a fundamental difference between a sedentary bath and a door for the elderly from the design of traditional products.

In the event that you do not plan to replace the traditional design with a modern one or, for objective reasons, do not have the opportunity to do so, it is necessary to pay attention to bath equipment with separate functional elements. These include specially designed benches, chairs, seats, handrails, holders, stairs and coasters.

3. Functional elements: handrails, seats, chairs, benches, steps

Bathroom accessories for the elderly,   facilitating daily procedures, such as handrails and handles, are one of the most important elements of additional equipment. Their installation in the right places on the wall helps to go into the bathroom, rise in it, get out of it, go in and out of the shower cubicle, or sit down, get up from the toilet.

Mounting of the handrail of the holder directly next to the bathroom a good idea, which is useful not only for the elderly and people with disabilities

In addition to general purpose handrails, there is a special line of such products for bathrooms. Therefore, it is better to pay attention to such products. The models of the special line are made with regard to safety requirements and tested for durability, unlike the products general application. Do not purchase vacuum handles and holders. Precisely determine the specific location of the handrail installation and use the metiznogo method of attachment of this device.

The rounded model of handrails in a steel glossy color neither almost spoils the interior, while possessing an elevated level of reliability

It is recommended to install near the bath, in the shower, near the sink and on one or both sides of the toilet. Today, there is a wide range of handrails, handles and holders for every taste: short and semicircular - for installation next to the sink, special handrails for installation next to the bathroom, long and pull-out for use near the toilet, straight or curved, smooth and with a rough surface.

A set of additional equipment in red - a complete kit for creating a friendly space

Companies specializing in the production of bathroom products will offer you ready-made sets of handrails and handles, including additional necessary items, such as mirrors, chairs and seats. A variety of colors and material allows you to easily add selected items to your existing interior.

  Bathroom seat for the elderly

One of the risks that elderly people experience in the bathroom is the wet floor and the associated probability of slipping, and therefore the risk of falling and getting injured. Special items for the bathroom - a wide category of products for people with disabilities and simply the elderly, covering all aspects of personal hygiene. And the seat in the bathroom for the elderly   people are a very common object from this category.

Simple design with an external side handle option for people with a slight decrease in motor activity

Special bathroom bench for the elderly   can be made of plastic, wood, metal or using a combination of these materials. When choosing such a seat, it is necessary to be guided by separate criteria.

What to look for when choosing a seat:

  • Not buy the cheapest plastic seatsfor bathroom. The material from which they are made, as a rule, does not possess the necessary quality, which threatens the possibility of their premature failure, and sudden;
  • Get seat for a specific person. Any seat in the bathroom for the elderly or for the shower must be purchased taking into account the physical characteristics of a person: height and weight;
  • When buying a seat, be clear about the size of your equipment. Not the size of the product the width of the bathtub   may lead to injury;
  • Picking up a seat, pay attention to it safety for plumbing. Scratches and rubs on ceramics are completely useless.

A simple, reliable bathtub seat. Basis - metal, places of contact with enamel - plastic, landing surface - white heat-resistant plastic

Shower without walls and a pallet can additionally be equipped with a plastic chair or stool. This can be a fixed or folding version of the highchair. Such special stools and high chairs do not take up much space, and you can use them if necessary.

Such stools for outdoor showers you can buy in online stores at a price of 30 to 60 dollars

In the photo above are two folding chairs. Choosing a specific model of a chair or stool for a bathroom, be sure to focus on the weight of a person and buy models with a strength margin from the manufacturer's claimed.

Comfortable chair seat with stand allows you to choose a landing place, makes it possible to use it both as a seat with stand and as a low chair

The choice of a suitable model is limited only by the financial side of the issue, if you wish, you can buy the most expensive model with an electric switch with a remote control function. But the quality product of a specialized manufacturer will serve you no less reliably and for a long time.

Special functional chair for bath. Metal carcass   gives confidence in the reliability, and finishing with a semi-soft plastic, in the places of landing in the bath, makes it safe for its enamel

Steps of various configurations are in great demand when equipping the hygienic room for the elderly. The main purpose of the step is to facilitate the process of entering and leaving the bath. Selection of the required type of product is carried out based on their physical condition of the person for whom it is purchased and the height of the side of the bath. The simplest and initial option is a single step for the elderly bathroom without an additional handle with an anti-slip coating.

This step of the entry-level general purpose can be purchased at a price of 6 dollars

More expensive, but more convenient and reliable option is the step with additional side handles. There is no need to explain why the acquisition of such models is recommended first.

When choosing stairs with side handles, pay attention to those options that provide for the possibility of fixing the steps for the bathroom to its side. Bathroom screed for the elderly   The only solution for the comfortable adoption of hygienic procedures at high sides.

Step ladder with one marching surface, an additional side handle and the possibility of fastening to the side of the bathtub

  Mirror

The correct mirror should not be large and be fixed too high. In addition, it is possible to change the angle of its inclination when using a wheelchair. In addition to the fixed mirror, install a larger magnifying mirror on the movable lever, this will help in daily hygienic facial treatments.

Additional movable mirror with a magnifying display effect of a small plus when equipping the bathroom

  Floor covering

In new construction or repair with the replacement of tiles on the floor, you must choose a tile with an anti-slip surface class of at least R9. Diversity floor tiles, proposed by manufacturers, will make such a choice in such a way that the coating was both beautiful and functional.

The bathroom floor covering must firstly meet the safety requirement

A good solution is to use mats with an anti-slip surface for the floor, especially in the shower or bath area. But remember that all kinds of additional limited covers, even such as rugs, can be an obstacle for people traveling in a wheelchair, crutches or walkers.

4. Bathroom for the elderly - video information

Much of what I would like to do or should have done, unfortunately, is often limited to a small bathroom area. With the general principles of creating an interior in small bathrooms, you can see in the article.

Finally.According to the European Association for the Promotion of Safety and Accident Prevention, 47% of injuries, involving people over the age of 60, occur at home. In the first place among the injuries at home is the bathroom. That is why it is so important to ensure the safety and comfort of staying elderly and disabled in the bathroom.
