If you have not changed the pipes in the old house for many years and want to modernize the water supply system, you will need such a service as replacing cast-iron sewer pipes with plastic ones. Old worn out pipes begin to flow water and sewage, which can lead to damage to the walls and the spreading of unpleasant odors in the apartment.
Such plumbing works in Moscow or the Moscow region should only be carried out by qualified plumbers with the appropriate qualifications and great practical experience! Addressing to our company, you can be assured of the professionalism of our masters and the optimal prices for services!

The advantages of replacing cast-iron sewer pipes with plastic in the bathroom or toilet
In most of the old houses, the so-called "Stalinist" or "Khrushchev", which were built decades ago, all water supply and sanitation systems have long been worn out and require replacement. Old pipes flow, do not pass the normal head of water, let in moisture or sewage. To cheaply and with a guarantee to change old pipes, please contact our company, we have the best sanitary technicians - always sober, responsible and sociable!

Despite a number of advantages of cast-iron pipes, polymer analogues have a number of advantages, in comparison with them.
Advantages of plastic pipes:
Affordable price. The cost of replacing cast-iron sewer pipes with plastic pipes differs favorably from the installation of a pipeline of other materials.
Light weight. Such types of pipes are easier to transport and deliver to the installation site,
Easy installation, no need for special equipment.
High strength and durability, corrosion resistance.
Absence of accumulation of various mechanical particles on internal walls of pipes, which reduces the percentage of probability of pipeline clogging.

Plastic pipes are produced for both internal and external sewerage, have a long service life (up to 50 years, depending on the operating pressure and temperature of the medium to be passed), low weight, excellent performance.
How is the replacement of cast-iron sewer pipes by plastic in the apartment?
The list of materials, components, and the necessary tools for the replacement of pipes is determined individually and depends on the layout of the sewer. Such work must be done by professional plumbers, replacement of pipes without proper qualification can lead to damage to the centralized water supply or sewerage system, and, accordingly, the cost of repairs.

Our plumbers are replacing cast-iron sewer pipes with plastic pipes in the toilet, bathroom, in the kitchen. We can replace the pipes according to the old wiring scheme, or refine and optimize it.

Some features of such plumbing works:

To unpleasant smells of sewage drains do not rise up the pipes, getting into living rooms, you need to install on the system check valves.
On the new sewer stand, we recommend installing a inspection hatch.
When replacing old cast-iron sewer pipes with plastic ones, the replacement of the entire riser is the most convenient option. in most of the old houses, the plumbing and the sewerage become unusable and this can create problems with leaks throughout the riser. Therefore, if you decide to change pipes, you can try to negotiate with neighbors and replace the riser. Dismantling is carried out by experienced masters, with the use of modern equipment and personal protective equipment.
Installation of the sewerage system must begin with design, taking into account the features of the existing scheme, the number of water intake points, etc. This approach allows ensuring effective water supply and water disposal, eliminating the appearance of unpleasant odors and other problems.

Plastic pipes (made of PVC or polypropylene) have several advantages:

  • light weight, thanks to which it is easy to work with pipes;
  • installation of sewage from plastic does not require special equipment;
  • ideal smoothness of internal surfaces reduces riser clogging ;
  • are not afraid of corrosion.

There is one minus: the noise insulation characteristics of plastic are noticeably lower than that of cast iron.

Who will do it?

If you are sure that you can replace the sewage system, carefully study the process. There are some subtleties of preparation and the work itself. You can also hire professionals. Then the knowledge of the entire process will be needed just in case. To understand what to look for and how to take work.

Materials and Tools

How much you need pipes, connecting and fastening elements - depends on the layout of the sewer. Make calculations a little easier if your new sewer system should completely repeat the old one. If you are planning any alterations, modifications of the old system, be very careful in all calculations.

It is desirable on the new sewer stand  to plan a revision hatch, even if it is not on old pipes. Pay attention to the fittings (tees, revisions, frogs) - their choice depends on the design of the sewer wiring. Cuffs, which are placed in the junctions of plastic and cast-iron pipes, must be rubber.

Another very important detail of the future sewerage system is the compensating branch pipe. It will help to accurately adjust the new sewage elements to existing ones.

One of the main tools for replacing cast-iron sewer pipes with plastic ones is the Bulgarian. It is required when dismounting the riser. Depending on whether the existing sewerage system was sealed, a gas burner or blowtorch may be needed. Other tools:

  • a hammer;
  • chisel;
  • level;
  • roulette;
  • marker;
  • plumb bob;
  • safety glasses and a respirator.

A plus silicone sanitary sealant  , a cement slurry and a little liquid soap.

Organizational matters

How to replace cast-iron sewer pipes and not get a heap of problems with neighbors? The ideal option is to negotiate with the entire riser. It can be quite difficult and long. But this method is the most effective. All neighbors on the vertical are in the know about what is happening, no one is offended. Plus, they will react more and more calmly to the inability to operate the sewage system for a while.

If you undertake such work alone, you still have to negotiate with the neighbors from above and below. First about the work, and then about the system after the replacement.

Dismantling

  1. It all starts with a riser. The pipe should be sawed at a height of approximately 0.6 m from the floor and 0.1 m from the ceiling. You can not do one continuous sawing - they are done by two with a small jumper. It is destroyed with a hammer and a chisel, after which the pipe can be removed. This kind of work is quite difficult to do alone. The best option - that one person knocked out a jumper, and the second at this time held the pipe.
  2. All these works are done without jerks. Otherwise, it is possible to damage part of the sewer pipe in the floors. This is not scary only when it is planned to replace the pipes throughout the vertical. Dismantling the riser is the most difficult part of the job, removing all other elements of the sewage system is much easier.
  3. When can I need a burner or a blowtorch? In some old houses, the sealing of the sewer riser is done by the method of pouring sulfur. This substance is just not removed, you can only burn it. Harmful to humans are formed during work. That's why we need a respirator.
  4. If the sealing is made with cement mortar, it must be carefully cut out and cleaned. In these works, it is also important not to damage the lower part of the old pipe.
  5. At the end of the dismantling works, the connection points of the old and new sewerage must be thoroughly cleaned.

Installation of plastic pipes

Be very careful when you start to install a new sewer. There are three important nuances:

  1. Installation is carried out only from the bottom to the top.
  2. All sockets are installed to meet the flow.
  3. If the plastic is not tight enough to "sit down" in the cast iron, you will additionally need a linen winding or a silicone sealant.

Another advice: that the cuffs, which are placed in the junctions of the new plastic with the old cast iron, are easier to install on their seats, lubricate them with liquid soap. Particular attention should be paid to trimming the pipes to the desired length.

The work is started from the riser and produced in the following order:

  • Insert the rubber cuff into the lower section of the pipe, then the cross or tee. Check the tightness of the connection.
  • Place the compensation tube (up to the stop) in the cut pipe. Assemble the sample to the upper length of the riser. The distance to the bottom edge with the fitting installed must be greater than 5 mm. All fitting is done without rubber gaskets and cuffs. They are installed when the fitting is finished and the final assembly begins.
  • In the wall you need to install the fasteners. For a vertical riser, three are sufficient for standard ceilings.
  • Run the assembly of the riser and other elements of the sewage system.

After the completion of all work, the design must be tested. The best way is to pass through the new pipes a considerable amount of drainage. If there are no leaks, the work was carried out successfully.

Now you can imagine how to properly replace the old cast-iron sewage system with a new and beautiful plastic one.

In all houses built in the Soviet era, it is necessary to change the pipes, in particular the sewer riser. All equipment has a shelf life. Pipes wear out, cracks appear on them, and through them seepage flows and a stench spreads into the room. It's impossible to live in such an apartment.

To prevent the situation from reaching such a state as soon as suspicions of leakage appear, it is recommended that replacement of sewerage  on plastic.

Replacement of the cast iron pipe with plastic

This should be handled by service organizations, since the cast-iron riser is very difficult to replace. Nevertheless, it is possible to do it by oneself.

Pipeline selection and necessary tools

In old houses all pipes were installed from cast iron, including sewer pipes. Of course, this is a very strong and reliable material, but it also has its expiration date. Therefore, sooner or later, there comes a time when it needs to be replaced.

Modern risers are made of even more durable material, which is also light and externally more aesthetic. Masters recommend switching to this more practical material. Steel or galvanized pipes will need to be changed in ten to twenty years again. But if you make a replacement for polypropylene or polyvinyl chloride, their operation is guaranteed to thirty to fifty years. And often it stretches for an even longer period.

And if, together with the replacement, you take care of the good ventilation, which can be purchased in a complete set with pipes, then you can simply forget about sewage smells.

Before starting work on the dismantling of the pipeline, you need to make sure that you have all the tools you need for this at your fingertips.

Since to replace cast-iron sewage  on plastic it is necessary in a multi-storey house, preliminarily block the water. Therefore, the work is done as quickly as possible.

  connection of a new plastic sewage pipe with an old cast iron

Also, neighbors from the top are warned not to use the toilet and water, otherwise everything will be sent to your apartment, and neighbors from below will be flooded.

To dismantle the sewer pipe, the following tools are required:

  • bulgarian;
  • nailing;
  • a large screwdriver to remove small parts from the system;
  • chisel;
  • perforator;
  • a hammer;
  • grinding machine;
  • film to block the tube hole;
  • apron, gloves and goggles for individual protection.

Dismantling of old sewerage system

Deciding on an independent replacement of the riser, it's best to negotiate with neighbors so that if necessary they can give access to the apartments. However, in most cases, the replacement occurs exclusively in their apartment between the floor and the ceiling.

Before changing the cast-iron sewage system to plastic, check the diagram of this pipeline.

Step-by-step instructions for removing the riser are as follows:

  1. Calculate the distance of ten centimeters from the ceiling surface and eighty from the tee. Two inscriptions are made by a Bulgarian. The depth should be half the diameter of the pipe.
  2. The chisel is attached to the upper notch and is hammered. Then repeat the same manipulation below. Beats should be applied with enough force to split the pipe so that the middle part is removed.
  3. The pipe from the ceiling is covered with a film of polyethylene.
  4. Disassembling the lower part, consisting of a tee and other fittings, arm yourself with a nail or scrap to loosen the fasteners. Then remove the fitting. But, basically, this requires additional work with the puncher. With it, remove the cement on the mounts.
  5. With a chisel or screwdriver, the cement is broken off, and then the tee is removed. If it did not work out, the fitting is cut off by the Bulgarian, retreating up to three centimeters from the socket.
  6. At the remaining places, remove all contaminants and clean cast iron with a grinder.

Installation of pipes

After removing the old pipeline, you must immediately install a new one, so as not to cause unnecessary inconvenience to neighbors. But they begin the process, like the previous one, by checking all the tools necessary for this.

  Fastening the plastic pipe to ensure the desired angle of inclination

The following equipment is required for installation:

  • pipes with a diameter of one hundred and ten centimeters;
  • the diverting tee is made of the same material as the riser;
  • rubber sealing cuffs to fix the fasteners between the protruding stumps of cast iron and the plastic pipe;
  • a branch pipe for transition from pig-iron to plastic and back;
  • pipe fittings;
  • soap, used to facilitate entry into the fasteners, that is, a kind of lubricant;
  • vertical construction level.

The installation takes place in the reverse order compared to the dismantling procedure:

  1. Rubber cuffs are inserted into the pipe cut.
  2. Attach the adapter from above, and the tee from below. All parts must be fastened as tightly as possible to ensure maximum tightness. With free movement of the tee, the joint is sealed with a silicone sealant or a winding made of flax.
  3. The plastic riser is fixed with clamps. If the height of the ceiling is standard, then usually do three things: for the top, bottom and middle. If it is high, then you need to buy additional connections.
  4. The system is pre-assembled.
  5. In the tee, the pipe is necessarily lowered to connect the plastic and cast iron.
  6. Each attachment is lubricated with a sealant made of silicone and waiting for it to solidify.
  7. Then turn on the water and check the pipe connections for leaks. If everything is in order, then this part of the work can be considered fulfilled.

Soundproofing and causes

Of course, pipes made of polyvinyl chloride and polypropylene are much better than cast iron pipes. They will last longer, have an aesthetic appearance and are much cheaper. However, they have one significant drawback. It's noise. At first, they did not know how to be even experienced specialists. But today, as soon as the pipes are installed, they begin to deal with noise and sound insulation. To do this is not difficult at all. Therefore, do not be afraid! Having done such a job, you will forget what noise is from the pipe.

  installation of a plastic pipe with a non-return valve and connection to a cast-iron riser pipe

One way to achieve the effect of sound insulation does not exist yet. Therefore, different acoustic properties, depending on the design, and the availability of various materials are used.

Why do cast-iron pipes do not make a sound, and modern plastic ones are so noisy? After carrying out of special researches it was revealed some reasons of extraneous sounds from a riser. Among them are:

  • shock sounds occur when the content beats against the walls of the pipes, making a noise;
  • atmospheric phenomena occur when the howling of the wind, the pounding of rain or the more hail;
  • resonant manifestations appear in the transmission of extraneous noise;
  • vibration sounds are transmitted from the whole structure, the movement of underground transport and so on.

The pipe itself, thanks to its shape, assumes the possibility of perception and transmission of a different nature of sounds. But the material from which it is made is also important. Those risers made of cast iron, which are still standing in old buildings, do not make noise precisely for this reason. After all, it is not completely metal. It is an alloy, which consists of different grains, differing in composition and properties. Due to this, sound absorption is ensured, as the grains rub against each other and reduce vibration.

  pruning old cast iron pipe

In addition, such pipes are covered with a coating from the inside, which in itself plays the role of an excellent soundproofing device, despite the fact that the movement of sewage is slowing down.

Installation of sound insulation

The main task of soundproofing in an apartment is to minimize noise and, if possible, to suppress vibration.

The ideal option is to purchase special noise-damping pipes. Some firms produce and install such risers. They include plastic with the addition of mineral powder. Thus, a material having similar properties with cast iron is provided. However, these pipes are expensive and many can not afford. In addition, the period of their operation, as a rule, does not exceed twenty years.

Therefore, basically for replacement use plastic pipes  with subsequent isolation from noise and sound.

From the walls they are isolated by means of clamps of dampers, and from the floors by polyurethane slabs.

In order to eliminate the unpleasant gurgling in the pipes apply polyurethane foam or polystyrene. Turns both the riser and the wiring, so that no sound is transmitted.

In addition, you can use foamed polyethylene, but this material is extremely short-lived and can start to sour and even stick after the first hot summer.

Replacement of the sewer pipe - though difficult work, but with it even a novice can cope with it. However, if you are not sure of your strengths or the pipes in the house have strongly rusted, it is better to resort to the help of specialists and entrust the work to them, otherwise you risk flooding your apartment and neighbors from the bottom.

Plastic pipes are used in the construction of pipelines of various types due to many advantages - resistance to corrosion, light weight, simple installation. Therefore, replacing cast-iron sewers with plastic ones is an excellent solution, but dismantling old pipes is not so easy. This work requires experience in the use of power tools. When replacing it is necessary to comply with safety rules. How to look plastic products, you can see in the photo. Advantages of plastic pipes:

  • low price, in comparison with other types of similar products;
  • durability (serve for several decades);
  • not covered with rust;
  • light weight, which facilitates the installation process and allows you to perform it yourself.

  Preparing to replace the cast-iron sewage system with plastic

   The dismantling of the cast iron sewage system begins with the preparation of tools.

The work is done with the help of:

  • chisel;
  • hammer with a nozzle (rubber or wooden);
  • perforator;
  • a chisel;
  • 2 adjustable keys, knives, screwdriver, scrap, steel wedge for the analysis of parts of pipes;
  • grinding wheel, and 3-4 pieces of 125 mm discs.

Before dismantling, it is determined how the cast iron parts (in particular the crossings and tees) have been connected to the shaped section, for which it is required to find the connection point - usually it is placed higher than the level of the floor covering. If a tile is laid on the floor or there is a screed, then a punch or chisel will be needed to search. Work with them should be carefully - you can not damage the remaining socket in the ceiling.

The connection between tees, crosses and pipes can be performed in three ways:

  • filling with sulfur;
  • a polymer-cement mixture;
  • zachechenkoy solution. You can use cement-sand or cement.

  Dismantling of old cast-iron sewerage

As for how to dismantle the sewage system, this work is carried out in stages:
  1. The vertical pipe is cut with a pipe cutter. If it is not, then this work can be done by the Bulgarian, performing two cuts with an interval of 10-15 centimeters one from the other. They need to be placed at a slight angle relative to each other, and converge near the wall, where the pipe is not cut, so that its top does not sink. The product is cut 3/4 relative to the perimeter. With the use of a wedge, driven on either side, the cut out section is broken with a chisel, and the remainders are knocked out with a hammer. Pieces are taken out carefully so that they do not fall into the sewage system and thus do not hammer the system.
  2. In the future, trim the top edge at a specific height. To further easily connect the sewer to the plastic sewer, the upper part of the pipe leaving the ceiling. Its height should correspond to the parameters of the shaped product that is pressed when installing products from plastic. The cutting is performed with respect to the horizontal line, therefore the place of the saw is pre-marked with a paint tape. Applying a sharp blow directed towards the wall, the pipe is destroyed in the place where the incision was made. Cast iron products are fragile, and problems with this can not arise.
  3. Usually the riser has several components. They can be revisions, couplings and other elements. To check the strength of the connection you need to be careful, trying not to damage the bottom bell, swing the remainder of the pipe. If it is possible, then they start to pull it out in pieces, helping with crowbar.
The replacement of cast-iron sewers with plastic ones by their own hands can not be called particularly difficult. If the joint of the pipe with the shaped elements is rigid, then to disassemble the structure it is necessary to clear the joint place, loosening the product. When the junction of the connecting elements is significantly expanded, it is possible to apply a puncher with a thin borer that does not have a winning tip. The solution connecting the elements, gently try to chisel, and the remnants are removed by the chisel.
   Dismantling can be difficult if the seam is practically absent, and the solution has glued the elements together too tightly. In this case, use the old cloth for metal to expand the joint. If in the end to disassemble the connection did not work, then cut the shaped part 2-3 cm above the joint.

A piece of pipe, which remained in the socket, is cut by a bulgarian, while removing protection, at different angles of inclination of the disc. Fragments of the remaining shaped parts of the pipes are removed using a special wedge.

In how to disassemble the old cast-iron sewers, there is nothing complicated. You just have to be patient.

  Preparation for installation of pipes from plastic by own hands

Replacement will require materials:
  • a plastic pipe with a diameter of 50 millimeters;
  • fastening for the riser;
  • rubber cuff (sewage transition from pig-iron to plastic);
  • shaped plastic elements (cross, tee, compensating branch, sometimes revision).
As for the tools, you will need:
   Pipes are cut to the calculated length, at the end should be removed chamfer or sanded with sandpaper. To accurately determine the length of the product, the compensating pipe is placed in it as far as the stop. Then the resulting design is also inserted to the limit in the remainder of the cast-iron pipe, which is located in the upper ceiling. The minimum gap size, which should remain between the tee or the cross, and the resulting assembly, can not be less than half a centimeter. Pre-assembly is performed without using rubber gaskets and cuffs.

   Concerning how to join the cast iron sewage system with plastic, then to use for this purpose instead of sliding sleeves, the branch pipe does not make sense.

Several fastenings are placed in the wall. If the ceilings have a standard height, then three pieces are enough, if they are high - then 4.

To perform the final assembly, mount all the required cuffs and gaskets, put soap on the ends of the products, connect the pipes. After the final installation of the riser and the completion of the clamping of the clamps, the working capacity of the sewage system is checked, passing a large volume of water through it. Replacement may be considered finalized only after successful completion of the tests.

In how to change cast-iron sewers to plastic, there is nothing complicated. It is only necessary to follow the instructions exactly. If there are doubts that it will be possible to perform this work correctly, it is worthwhile to turn to specialists. Plastic sewerage, if properly performed, will last for decades without requiring repair. For this reason, if cast-iron pipes are allowed to flow, it is better to immediately change them to plastic ones.
