A horse is a kind of rib located at the very top of the roof. It is obtained due to the joint of the roof slopes made of corrugated board. It is also worthwhile to include a variety of additional elements that are attached to the rib. Most often, the skate takes place in gable roofs, but it can still be found in complex four pitched ones.

When carrying out the installation of the ridge, it is necessary to pay attention to two very important points - the product of accurate calculations, the ventilation device of the attic space, the attic, and also the roofing pie.

Types of skates

If you take into account the options for skating, then there are two main directions:

Skate functions and its use

The most important function of fastening the skate to the roof of the corrugated board is protective. It is designed to avoid getting moisture under the roof. Ridge height

When calculating, we multiply the width of our house by the available coefficient from the table, depending on the angle of inclination of the roof slope. The fastening of the ridge must then be of the appropriate height. If the width of the house is 10 meters and the angle of the gradient is 30 degrees, then we calculate this way:

5 (width of one side) * 0.59 (coefficient) = 2.95.

When we mount a skate on the roof of the corrugated board, we must adhere to certain rules:

  • His device on time should be in the completion of work on the roof. Do not forget about the ventilation layer. Its purpose is to protect the skateboard from moisture. In addition, the protection is to not let in the attic or attic of insects and various birds.
  • Roof covering, which is best to choose from corrugated board, should not fit snugly. This is done so that there is free access of air to the space under the roof.

  • plain;
  • semicircular;
  • with an n-shaped edge.
  1. A simple horse is an ordinary metal angle, having a shelf width of 10 to 30 cm (these dimensions are considered standard). It is desirable to supply the bezel, that is, the bends of the edges of the metal by 15 mm. Thanks to this, the ridge is given the necessary rigidity. With a rigid element, the completion of the installation is carried out more accurately and quickly. Installation of the ridge is much easier, gusts of the wind will not interfere and will not bend it.
  2. If you are installing a skate with an n-shaped edge, you should keep in mind that it differs from simple one. First of all, the appearance: the dimensions of the shelves are the same, but the edge is made in the form of the letter P. Usually the size of the rib is 20X40 mm or 20X30 mm. Most manufacturers have the ability to perform items at specified sizes. With such a device, skating is more convenient. Before the actual installation of the ridge is made, the beam is fixed, then the roof is mounted, the laying of the corrugated board is made. The U-shaped rib is screwed to the ridge beam using self-tapping screws.
  3. A semicircular ridge may have different fin diameters, but a plug, or ridge end element, is a mandatory component.

Use of seals for the ridge on the corrugated board

For the manufacture of the roof ridge, profiled or galvanized steel is used. Its standard length is two meters.

Another of the mandatory elements that are included in the roofing device is the ridge seal. It is used to seal the gap, which separates the ridge sheet and corrugated board.

Seals can be for metal, for corrugated board, universal self-adhesive. Of these species, the first two have the same pattern as the roofing iron.

For all varieties of profiled sheet, there is a certain method of installation and its seal. In the cut, the universal tape has the form of a square or a rectangle. Some of the manufacturers offer a ridge ventilating tape. Most often it is in the form of a semicircle.

The material for the manufacture of the sealant is foamed PVD or polyurethane foam, so there is no obstacle for air circulation.

To mount the ridge to the corrugated board use special screws for the roof. You can choose those that are painted in the same color as the roof, with a pad of silicone. This additional element is always under the open sky, therefore it is necessary to use the gasket. This is a barrier to water, which will penetrate through the microscopic cracks at the head of the self-tapping screw under the roof, but thanks to it you can tighten the corrugated board and protection more. For the installation of a ridge you will need the following equipment:

The installation of the roof ridge is an important stage in the creation of a durable and durable roof construction. This element is entrusted with several important functions such as: protecting the under-roof space from rain, creating decorative roof finishes and venting to dry the roofing cake.

What is a skate

The roof ridge is formed by the closing of the skate planes. Depending on the type of truss construction, the skate can serve as a beam, mounted on special vertical racks or fixed on the gables of the house. Ridge legs rest on the ridge beam (run).

In the second case, the rafter legs are connected in pairs, forming triangular trusses, which are arranged in a row and connected by crosspieces. At the top of the structure, on both sides (on each slope), the boards are sewn at an angle to each other. The boards are placed parallel to the line of the cornice and form the ridge of the roof.

A roofing horse is often also called the ridge of a roof. This term refers to the covering of the slit formed in the upper part of the roof after being laid on the slopes of the roofing. For the arrangement, special shaped elements made of metal or of the material from which the roof is made can be used. A ridge for a roof is often referred to as a ridge. It can take different forms:

  • edge;

The choice of the principle of equipping the ridge and the type of protective bar should be made at the stage of designing the roof.

Functional features

The device of the roof ridge has its own peculiarities. This element of construction not only aesthetically complements the external appearance of the roof, but also plays a crucial role in ensuring the proper functioning of the roofing pie.

Modern roof is a complex multi-layer system, which includes waterproofing, insulation, vapor barrier. The cake also includes ventilation gaps. The air "layer" between the heat insulator and the roof creates an additional barrier between the insulation and the external environment, it allows to equalize the temperature with heat leakage from the house in winter and when the roof is heated in hot summer days. Thus, the roof does not heat up in winter, causing snow melting and the formation of an ice shell on the roof, and in summer the attic room does not overheat.



It is important not only to create a ventilation gap, but also to ensure efficient air circulation in it. For this purpose, the filing of the cornice overhangs is performed by perforated soffit, boards laid with a gap, or other material with additional installation of special ventilation grilles. Fastening of the ridge on the roof is carried out in such a way as to ensure free access of air to the ventilation gap of the roofing cake. The movement of air currents allows you to drain out excess moisture, not allowing it to accumulate in the insulation, as well as on the wooden elements of the roof frame. In this way, the roof rafters are rotted and other parts of the structure are damaged.

Calculation of height

Determination of the height of the roof ridge is usually performed at the design stage of the rafter system, especially when it comes to the construction of hip roofs or other complex structures, including roofs with asymmetrical skates.

The height of the location of this element depends on the angle of inclination of the roof slopes, which is selected based on the following factors:

  • type of roofing material;
  • architectural features and aesthetic appearance of the building;
  • complexity of installation and economic feasibility.
  • The roof of the house should be proportional to the building box. The installation of a high roof requires the use of more material, and the hollow roof should withstand increased snow loads.



    To calculate the height of the skating element in complex cases, a special program or services of a professional architect is required. For simple buildings it is sufficient to take into account that the recommended angle of inclination of skates is 35-60 degrees. The height of the roof ridge is calculated by a simple geometric formula: in a right triangle, the length of the leg is equal to the length of the second leg multiplied by the tangent of the angle at the base. The basis of the triangle in the calculations is half the length of the wall of the house.

    Mounting Features

    The roof ridge (run) can be made of wood or steel. Since the beam of hardened steel has a fairly large weight, in private construction a wooden variant is predominantly used. The beam must be impregnated with a flame retardant agent before installation to prolong the service life of the structural element.

    The horse is protected from negative influences due to the waterproofing of joints, the device of ventilation gaps. External protection of the ridge is created with the help of special products, or done independently with the use of roofing materials or galvanized steel sheet.

    To install elements of external protection of the ridge, in the upper part of the ramps, a wide crate should be provided. The distance from the highest point of the slope to the edge of the roof covering should be about 7 cm. If a larger gap is left, ridge elements with wide blades are used for its external protection.



    To avoid condensation of moisture and steam under the ridge, heat and waterproofing is required. It is important to provide a ventilation compartment - in its absence, the condensate will accumulate even if the design is sealed securely.

    The device of ventilation of a roof

    Ventilation of the roof ridge is necessary to create air flows inside the roofing cake. Arrangement of ventilation in the roof requires the following types of work:

    • after the installation of the rafter system, a waterproofing material is laid across the rafter legs (the seams have a 15 cm clearance and are glued with a connecting tape);
    • on the rafters is stuffed a brace and a crate;
    • the roofing material is laid, not reaching up to the ridge;
    • in the ridge there is a ventilation hole, the waterproofing under it is overlapped. This hole will allow air to circulate in the ventilation gap of the roof;
    • gaps or openings must also be present in the filing of the cornice overhangs.

    Mounting the roof ridge provides installation of special ventilation boxes. The ventilation box is mounted with special fasteners or adhesives. Work should be carried out in dry, moderately warm weather.

    If the design features of the roof do not allow the ventilation compartment to be equipped or to make the necessary clearance, the attic space must be equipped with end windows to combat dampness.

    Fastening of ridge elements

    The way to fix the skate on the roof is selected depending on the material from which the protective ridge strip is made. Most often, roofing manufacturers offer curly items made from the same material.

    The basic principles of laying are that you should lay the extreme fragments of the finish of the ridge (from the side of both pediments), and pull the mounting cord. Orienting on it, the other elements are strictly horizontally mounted. It is important to arrange them in such a way that the wind does not blow into the joints, and moisture does not penetrate. Sealing the roof ridge can be performed with the help of:

    • building sealant;
    • mounting foam;
    • solution (for slate roofing);
    • special funds from the manufacturer of roofing).

    Traditionally, complete with slate you can purchase asbestos cement elements for external protection of the ridge. They are stacked on the slopes from both sides of the ridge run with overlapping of the upper edges and fastened with nails for slate.



    Metal ridge elements can be purchased at the store or made independently of galvanized steel sheet. Fasteners are made using self-tapping screws with a rubber or neoprene seal.

    Roof covering of ceramic tiles requires the use of special ceramic parts to protect the ridge. When installing the roof using soft bituminous shingles or roll materials, the skate can be pasted with the same material.

    Roof for the roof of corrugated board - functions and use

    Most manufacturers of corrugated sheets produce, in addition to the profiled sheet, all the elements necessary for the installation of the roofing system. The fin for the corrugated board is made of the same galvanized steel or steel with a polymer coating, as well as the profiled sheet itself. It is an organic part of the roof and, as a rule, invisible, although in reality it plays one of the main roles in ensuring the reliability of the roof.

    As for any pitched roof, the skate on the roof made of corrugated board is of particular importance. The first and main function is to protect the under-roof space from getting moisture from outside. Considering the very construction of the pitched roof, it is practically impossible to realize this task in any other way.


    Without the ridge, the service life of the roof will decrease very much, as well as its thermal insulation properties. Moisture will lead to corrosion of the metal and, if sufficient, to damage the crate and truss system. Therefore, you should not delay the process of laying the roof, and, moreover, leave it for a long time in an incomplete state. From the fixing of the cornice and the beginning of the installation of the sheets until the moment when you complete the roofing work, installing the roof ridge from the profiled sheet, it should not take more than a few days.

    In addition to protection from moisture, the ridge for profiled sheeting performs no less important function - it creates the conditions necessary for ventilation of the roof. This is especially important for insulated roofs.

    Since metal profiled sheets have the ability to heat very quickly under the influence of sunlight and also cool off in cold weather, a ventilation gap is always arranged between the waterproofing and the roofing coating from the profiled sheet. It is the circulating air that prevents the formation of condensation on the inner surface of the roofing, keeping it from corrosion and the subsequent penetration of moisture into the heater.

    In order to ensure ventilation, the installation of the ridge on the corrugated board is carried out in such a way that the air can freely exit both from the under-roof ventilation gap and from the ventilation gap between the heater and the waterproofing film. In this case, for a free passage of air, the waterproofing membrane does not reach the roof ridge by 40-60 mm.

    Thus, through air movement from bottom to top is provided: starting from the edge of the skates and ending with the vent hole under the ridge element. It should be noted that the places of fixing the waterproofing membrane near the ridge must be additionally insulated with a special tape, and this applies both to the edge directly adjacent to the ridge element, and the joint between adjacent membranes - both on the sides and below.

    Why do you need a ridge seal for a profiled sheet?

    Fastening of the ridge of the corrugated board is done by screws through the top corrugation of the profiled sheet. When installing between the surface of the ridge element and the profiled sheeting, a gap equal to the height of the roofing profile is formed. Even with the size of the ridge element 200 × 200 mm with the trapezium height of the corrugated board is more than 20 mm, splashes of water can penetrate into the under-roof space with scythe and strong wind. To avoid this, a special seal for the ridge of the corrugated board is laid in this place.


    Application of the ridge seal for the profiled sheet

    It should be borne in mind that when filling the corrugations of the profiled sheet with a sealant, it is necessary to leave a gap for air circulation. If there is no gap or it will be insufficient, the ventilation of the under-roof space will be very limited, which will affect the service life of the roof.

    The ridge seal for the profiled sheet is selected for a specific brand of corrugated board and as it reflects the shape of its corrugation. In case the required sealant is not available, you can use the universal option. Such a seal under the end of the profiled sheet has a simple rectangular shape and provides both protection from moisture and ventilation. However, it is more difficult to ensure a good fit of such a seal.

    How to attach a skate to the corrugated board?

    Before fixing a skate on a corrugated sheet, it is necessary to make sure that the upper edge of the skates is approximately on the same line. To do this, you can use a laser rangefinder or a simple cord. The discrepancy is allowed, but at a level of no more than 2% of the width of the ridge shoulder. That is, if you intend to use a skate for profiled sheeting, whose dimensions are 200 mm wide and 2 m in length, then the divergence along the upper edge of the ramp can not be greater than 200 · 0.02 = 40 mm. If the unevenness is greater, then it is fraught with roof leaks in such a place.

    The roof for the roof made of corrugated board is fixed with a pitch of 200-300 mm, and the laying of skate elements is performed with an overlap of 150-200 mm and starts from the side opposite to the prevailing winds in the region. As a rule, the size of the ridge for the corrugated board is in the range of 2 to 3 meters. If the length is longer to maintain the shape of the ridge, additional ribs or greater widths are needed.


    Fastening of the ridge to the corrugated board

    Usually the width of the "shoulders" of the ridge is in the range from 100 to 300 mm, which allows to reliably close the vulnerable place from the rain. Fastening is carried out at the ends of the shoulders, at a distance of several centimeters from the edge, and in some cases it is possible to mount both the ridge and the sealant with one self-tapping screw.

    A knot of the roof ridge made of profiled sheet, as a rule, has one of three forms:

    1. A simple L-shape;
    2. A horse with a vertex in the form of the letter "P";
    3. A horse with a round top.

    The latter option provides the best ventilation, but the price of the ridge for corrugated board of this form is higher. The cheapest option is simply a L-shaped skate, but it is also no less reliable with properly designed and mounted roofing.

    At the last stage of roofing with corrugated board, the design of ridge ribs (skates) is performed. The horse is formed on the skate intersection line, therefore it is an attribute of the pitched roof. From above, a special additional element is mounted on it - a ridge bar or a roofing skate. This work is not difficult for professionals. But if you plan to install the skate on the roof of the corrugated board yourself, you will have to deal with some technological subtleties.

    In roofing terms, sometimes you can get confused, especially when one word is called different things. This also happens with the term "skate", which can denote the structural part of the roof or additional element of the roof.

    The horse, as part of the roof, is the upper edge formed when the skates intersect. Therefore, on a gable roof, where there is one such intersection, one skate is formed. On the gable - there are already two skates. And on more complex multi-pitched roofs - even more.

    Also, a skate is called an accessory to cover the structural ridge of the roof (rib). Its other name is the skate ridge. It closes the gap between the skates and can have different shapes. The most commonly used for corrugated board are skates with a triangular and figured flat section.

    Therefore, in order to completely decorate the skate on the roof of the corrugated board, it is required to equip the edge of crossing the skates (constructive hobby) and to cover it with a ridge strip.


    Forming a ridge rib

    A ridge rib is formed when the rafters' feet of adjacent skates are mated. It is a line that passes through the upper points of the conjugation.

    To join the rafters in the ridge use several methods:

    • Buttock - when the rafter's legs are cut at the junction at an angle corresponding to the slope angle of the skates. When mating, the junction site is hammered by nails and additionally connected by overlays - wooden or metal.
    • Lapped - the upper parts of the rafters are stacked on top of each other and stitched together with nails, bolts or studs.
    • Vrubka "vpolderova" - at the edges of the piles (at the points of mating) cut the notches by half the thickness of the bar. Then these notches are superimposed on each other and connected by any through connection, for example, a bolt passed through both rafter legs.

    In a complex with other fastenings the method of cutting into a ridge run can be applied. On the rafters do cutouts, due to which they "put on" the ridge beam. Between the rafters in this case can be fixed overlapping, buttock with overlays or "vpoldereva."

    Ridge run can also be used as a support for rafters, without binding.


    After installing the rafters the skate is formed in accordance with the structure of the roofing cake. For profiled sheeting, the sequence of layers, as a rule, is as follows: rafter system, waterproofing, lathing, ridge plank.

    Ridge bar and its functions

    The ridge bar is an outer corner (of different cross-sectional shape) made of galvanized steel. Products with polymer coating (color) or without it are found. As a rule, the skate is selected for the color of the profiled sheet, so that after installation the strip merges with the common coating and becomes almost invisible.

    Since the ridge bar serves to bridge the gap in the structural roof ridge, it performs the following functions.

    1. Protection of the under-roof space

    This is the most important function, which it is practically impossible to realize without a skate. Moisture, which can get into the gap between the slopes, causes corrosion of the metal, damage to the crate and the whole rafter system. Therefore, without overlapping this clearance with a ridge, the service life of the roof and its thermal insulation properties will be significantly reduced.

    2. Providing under roof ventilation

    When laying the plank, there are gaps between its sole and the profile of the corrugated board (the height of the gap is equal to the height of the profile). In the ventilation system, they play the role of exhaust holes through which air leaves the under-roof space. The air flow is carried out through the holes in the cornices. Thus, in the presence of cracks in the ridge and near the cornice eaves, a continuous movement of air is started to ventilate the under-roof space. This is especially important for insulated roofs.

    Despite the modern vapor barrier films, which are necessarily included in the roofing cake in the presence of a heater, some of the warm vapors from the interior still fall into the under-roof space. Faced with the surface of the metal, with the difference in temperature inside and out, warm steam cools and turns into water droplets, that is, into condensate. Ideally, it must be dried quickly, so that it does not harm the roof. To do this, in the under-roof space create an air flow, moving from the top down: from the cornice overhangs to the holes in the ridge.

    It is worth noting that moisture in the under-roof space is not always due to one condensate. The profiled (and other metal roofs) are not completely sealed. Therefore, moisture penetrates under the material also from the outside - during a strong wind and rain, for example. But this moisture is also dried properly organized ventilation.


    3. Decorative function

    The skate overlaps the gap between the skates and, accordingly, makes the roof visually complete. Fusing with the coating from the profiled sheet, the ridge strip looks like an organic continuation of the roof.

    Forms of ridge strap

    For roofs made of profiled sheet, skates can be used:

    • triangular (simple flat);
    • n-shaped (curly);
    • round (semicircular).

    Triangular strip - the simplest part, looks like an ordinary metal corner with the rolled edges.

    The U-shaped (figured) skate in cross-section forms a more complex figure with a fold at the top in the form of the letter P. This fold creates a U-shaped vent "pocket", which helps to air the ridge from the ends. The figure skate looks more interesting on the corrugated board, but requires more metal consumption. Therefore, its value is slightly higher.

    Round skates are the most decorative, used for wave corrugated board. In appearance they resemble a semicircular trough with side shelves for fastening. Requires the use of side plugs of a semicircular or conical shape, in which holes for ventilation are provided. Round skates form the largest ventilation "pocket", in comparison with the straight-shaped slats. But their cost is the highest, including because of the need to use stubs.

    As a rule, the length of the ridge element is 2-3 m. During installation, they are collected by overlapping along the entire line of the ridge rib. The width of the shelf of ridge bars is 100-300 mm. The most practical width - 150-200 mm, it allows you to protect the vulnerable part of most roofs from external factors.

    The narrower bars look good on small roofs, but their functionality, unfortunately, can be at a low level. The same bars, the width of the shelves which reaches 300 mm, usually look too massive. For this reason, they find their application on overall roofs covered with profiled sheeting with high corrugation.


    Seal application

    Ventilation gaps, unfortunately, miss not only air. With heavy rain (snow) and wind, moisture can get under the hoe and seep into the under-roof space. Also, gaps, dust, insects and even birds (with a high profile) can enter the gaps. This is especially true of roofs with gentle slopes, which have a slight slope.

    Therefore, a seal is installed in the gap under the skate - porous material, which has the property of filling voids. There are several types:

    • Universal gasket is a foamed polyurethane foam tape characterized by open porosity. One side of the tape is often made self-adhesive, which increases the convenience of working with it. According to the manufacturers, the universal seal does not prevent the normal ventilation of the ridge, but this controversy and construction practitioners question it.
    • The profile sealant is a curly ribbon made of foamed polyethylene, has a rigid structure with closed pores. Repeats the profile of the corrugated board, so it completely fills the gap between the ridge and the roof. In order not to cut off ventilation in this way, openings are provided in the profile seal (they can be left closed if the ventilation of the under-roof space is carried out through point-shaped ridge or pitched aerators).
    • Self-expanding self-expanding sealer (PSUL) - a tape supplied in rolls. It is made of polyurethane foam impregnated with acrylic. Initially, the seal is supplied in a compressed form. Its expansion (up to 5 times!) Occurs after mounting the tape under the ridge. One side of the tape is self-adhesive, has a protective strip, which is removed for the possibility of gluing to the installation site.

    Mounting the skate on the corrugated board

    The installation of the ridge strap begins after the completion of the laying of the corrugated board. In this case, the sheets of corrugated board should not reach the ridge rib (skate crossing line) by 50-100 mm. This allows the air to move freely in the under-roof space and exit in the area of ​​the ridge.

    To securely fasten the skate, on the top of both skates one additional bar of the crate is mounted. They will serve as a support for fastening the ridge strap.


    Before fixing the skate, you need to make sure that the line of intersection of the rays (the edge) is even. To do this, use either a cord or a laser range finder. Small horizontal errors are permissible, but not more than 2% of the width of the ridge shelf. For example, if you want to mount a shoe with a shelf width of 200 mm and a length of 2 m, then the allowable deviations along the skate crossing line can not be greater than 0,02х200 = 40 mm.

    If there is a larger discrepancy, then the roof in such a place will be prone to leaks. In other words, if significant ridges of the ridge are detected, they will have to be eliminated or a ridge bar with an increased shelf width will be used.

    The order of works on the installation of the ridge:

    1. Begin work from one edge of the ridge rib, the direction of stacking is opposite to the movement of prevailing winds.
    2. Mount the seal. As a rule, it is glued to the ridge bar, from the back of the shelves, at a distance of 3 cm from the edges. Sometimes the seal is mounted directly on the profiled sheet, in the area of ​​the ridge.
    3. The ridge elements are laid along the structural ridge of the roof (rib) with an overlap of 150-200 mm. Overlapping of round skates is conducted along the lines of punching.
    4. The fastening of the elements is carried out to the top corrugation (wave or trapezoid) of the corrugated board, passing the screws through the crate. The fixing step is 300-400 mm. Screws are pounded at the ends of shelves of the ridge strap, a few centimeters from the edge.

    For fastening use roofing screws with a rubber sealing washer. Since the skate is fixed through the upper corrugation, the length of the self-cut is calculated based on the profile height of the profiled brand used.

    Use the formula:

    L = H + L 1 + L 2,

    where: L is the desired length of the self-tapping screw; H - wave height (trapezium) of corrugated board; L 1 - the length of the part of the self-tapping screw immersed in the crate (about 2.5-3 cm); L 2 - the thickness of the washer with a rubber gasket (about 4 mm).

    Use nails to fasten the ridge is not recommended, because in strong winds there is a risk of tearing off such an element from the roofing.

    Work is carried out, stacking the elements of the ridge one by one, to the edge of the ridge rib. At the end of the installation, check the smoothness and correctness of the installation, after which the ridge roof assembly is considered complete.
