Penetrating waterproofing (waterproofing penetrating action) - materials consisting of portland cement, fillers and mixtures of chemical compounds (also called active chemical additives). The additives typically include alkali and alkaline earth metal salts, but polymer additives can also be used.

To protect the foundation, the underground part of structures, floors, walls and roofs, there are several types of waterproofing. The most common waterproofing materials used in construction and repair are:

  • - Rolled roofing felt and insulating mats are waterproofing pasting technologies;
  • - coating mixtures and coatings - cement-sand plaster with the addition of water repellent modifiers, bitumen mastic, liquid rubber, liquid glass, polymer-concrete, synthetic resins, other types;
  • - backfill technology;
  • - molded moisture insulation - concrete substances are introduced into concrete (for example, silicate liquid glass) and it acquires special properties;
  • - injection waterproofing of deep penetration or it is also called an impregnation.

You will be surprised, but penetrating waterproofing was invented almost 70 years ago - in 1952 the Danish company Vandex began to produce a fundamentally new insulation material for concrete on the basis of fine cement-sand mixture for mixing with water. At the same time, a liquid formulation was obtained which, after application to the surface of the substrate, not only forms an external protective coating, as an oil insulation, but also penetrates into concrete or stone through cracks, micropores and structural capillaries. In this case, the mixture turns into strong water-insoluble, clogging all voids, waterproofing microcrystals. Thus, the base materials not only became impervious to water, but were further strengthened, which prolonged their service life.

Figure number 1. The principle of the penetrating waterproofing

The cheaper types of waterproofing - roll and coating, have such a disadvantage that, when applied to the surface of concrete with moisture in the pores (and this happens almost always), it forms a dense, non-breathable film that prevents the removal of vapors. Because of this, mold appears on the surface of the walls and floor. Penetrating waterproofing acts differently - if a liquid mixture enters the pores of concrete, its components react with cement and the crystals that are formed displace the vapor outwards. Once all the moisture is connected, and the excess is removed, the crystals cease to grow, and a surface film is formed.

Picture number 2. Crystals under magnification

Penetrating waterproofing can fill the thickness of concrete 30-40 cm deep, while completely sealing cracks up to 4 mm wide.

The service life of deep penetration protection is from 70 to 100 years (depending on the composition of the mixture). This is almost equal to the period of service of the concrete itself! While the lubrication protection is effective for 25-30 years.

Advantages of penetrating insulation

Waterproofing penetration has a number of advantages that other types do not own. It should be noted that:

  • - these materials can be used for all types of buildings and structures, underground and surface structures;
  • - the possibility of processing concrete structures of any age - both new and old - during repair and restoration work;
  • - deep penetration waterproofing protects ferro-concrete structures from corrosion of metal, thereby prolonging their service life by almost three times;
  • - a mixture of deep penetration can be applied to wet surfaces, that is, there is no need for preliminary drying of concrete;
  • - penetrating waterproofing is easily prepared and simply applied - manually or by spraying;
  • - complete environmental safety for people and the environment;
  • - as a result of the treatment of the foundation, walls, floor, installation areas of engineering networks, supports and other concrete structures, a completely sealed, seamless joint is formed;
  • - there is no need for further priming of walls and floor for further finishing;
  • - application temperatures - from -30 to +75 degrees (some mixtures can be operated on hot concrete surfaces - up to 85-105 degrees);
  • - the protective film is resistant to mechanical and chemical influences, does not crack, does not exfoliate during the whole period of operation of the building or structure.

Figure number 3. Application of penetrating waterproofing

Applications

Penetrating waterproofing is increasingly used in construction for:

  • - processing foundations of low-rise and multi-storey buildings;
  • - protection of walls and floors of basement and basement from groundwater;
  • - waterproofing of swimming pools, wells, water tanks, treatment plants and other water tanks;
  • - treatment of walls and floors of rooms with high humidity - bathrooms, bathrooms, laundries, saunas, cellars, etc .;
  • - protection of underground communication networks and facilities;
  • - waterproofing of GO objects, mines, storehouses, metro, tunnels.

Waterproofing penetrating action can not be applied to such types of building materials:

  • - foam concrete and aerated concrete;
  • - expanded clay concrete;
  • - Phenomagnesite and gas magnesite;
  • - foam and gas gypsum;
  • - shungizitobeton;
  • - shale concrete;
  • - expanded polystyrene concretes;
  • - asbestos-cement and other types of large porous materials.

And it's not that penetrating waterproofing is ineffective for these materials, but that because of the large amount of pores, the consumption of the protective mixture increases tens of times. Therefore, such an application is not justifiable from a financial point of view - it is more advantageous to use omapochnaya waterproofing.

Figure number 4. Penetrating waterproofing "PENETRON"

The most effective ready mixes

Most often in our country, these types of compounds are used:

  1. 1. The most famous penetrating waterproofing is American blends PENETRON. They are very effective for new concrete structures and old concrete with cracks not exceeding 0.5 mm. To close the slots more, you must first surface the walls and floor with PENCRETT. In the presence of external pressure leaks (wells, basins, treatment plants), it is necessary to process the structure with the PENELAG hydro-plug.
  2. 2. OSMOSIL - deeply penetrating insulation of Italian production, which is used in both private and industrial construction. A special feature of this mixture is the obligatory preliminary plastering of the surfaces of walls, floors and structures.
  3. 3. Domestic mixtures HYDROTEX and HYDROCHITE. They are divided into waterproofing materials for external use - with marking Y, and internal walls and floor - with marking B.
  4. 4. Very successful in the ratio of price / quality materials under the brand CRYSTALLIZOL from the domestic manufacturer GidroStroyKomplekt. Different types of products are on sale: for new concrete surfaces - carpent W12, for old W12, for joints and seams - "Sewnage", for restoration works "Repair", and "Hydroplomb" - for walls of wells.
  5. 5. AKVATRON-6 (manufacturer of Aquatron - BHK, Russia) - a double-acting sealant that penetrates into porous building materials to a depth of 40 cm.

Technology of work with penetrating compounds

Waterproofing materials of deep penetration are simple in application. The work is carried out in several stages.

  1. 1. Preparation of the surface of walls, floors, structures. This includes cleaning of dirt, stains, dust. Polished concrete should be treated with sandblasting and a solution (1:10) of hydrochloric acid, which will help open the pores. In the presence of mold, the substrate should be treated with an antiseptic.
  2. 2. For better adhesion and penetration of the protective mixture, at the base make stitches at the joints and seams, also increase the cracks to a depth of 2.5 cm and a width of 2 cm.
  3. 3. For brick walls, the technology is a bit different. Over the entire surface of the masonry it is necessary to drill the holes at an angle of 45 degrees, a depth of about 2.5-3 cm (by 2/3 of the thickness of the masonry), with a distance between them about 5 cm. These grooves should be rinsed with water under pressure and filled with a conventional plaster mixture , also under pressure). After the plaster has dried, it is possible to apply a waterproofing.
  4. 4. Protect the surface to be protected with water-roller or spray.
  5. 5. Strictly according to the instructions, dilute the dry composition with water. In this case, do not have to prepare the entire solution, and a portion that can be worked out in half an hour, and then - make a new one (after 30 minutes the composition seizes).
  6. 6. You can apply any tool - roller, brush, spatula (especially at the joints), spray gun. Which is better to choose - will be written on the packaging.
  7. 7. Apply the composition in two layers with an interval of 1-1.5 hours, thickness up to 1 cm, without smearing repeatedly and not rubbing.

Conclusion

Summing up, it can be argued that the deep penetration waterproofing has excellent operational properties, lacks the disadvantages of roll and slip technology, reliably protects and strengthens concrete and serves a very long time. Of the minuses, we can only note the rather high cost of this type of protection.

To solve the acute problem of restoration of waterproofing of basements and other long-exploited premises of buried type, traditional bitumen, pasting and plastering waterproofing is used less and less. The outdated materials were replaced by new technical solutions, implemented with the help of penetrating waterproofing.

The principle of the penetrating waterproofing

Two groups of materials are classified as waterproofing compositions of penetrating action: special surface coatings with penetrating effect and injection hydroactive solutions.

  • The composition of waterproofing coatings includes chemically active additives. Waterproofing compositions spread over the pores and capillaries of concrete to form insoluble crystals.

During the operation of structures, when new contacts of water molecules with concrete occur, a chemical reaction resumes with the development of the compaction into the interior of the structure.

  • Hydroactive injectable formulations are used to repair leaks in building structures. Basically, these are single-component polyurethane fluids having a low viscosity.

During contact with water, polyurethane compounds expand in volume. Injection waterproofing spreads throughout the structure. The water in the cavities is replaced with a waterproof polyurethane filler.

How penetrating waterproofing works - video

And this video will clearly show how penetrating insulating materials work:

Advantages of penetrating waterproofing

An important advantage of waterproofing materials of penetrating action is their ecological compatibility. These formulations provide waterproofness while maintaining vapor permeability. This property helps to maintain the performance characteristics of building materials - concrete, brick, stone - and the health of people living in such a building.

The advantages of penetrating waterproofing include its ability to form a single unit with a building structure.

The use of waterproofing penetration has a positive effect on frost resistance and strength of concrete. This is due to the fact that with constant filtration of water through concrete, the components of the cement stone are washed away. With loss of 20% calcium hydroxide, concrete loses up to 30% of the original strength. As a rule, such serious consequences are observed with long-term operation - about 40 years. Usually there is a loss of strength - 2-5%. But even this weakening of concrete can not be eliminated in the depth of the construction by all waterproofing materials. The restoration of the strength characteristics of concrete and reinforced concrete structures increases the frost resistance of the material.

The frost resistance of the waterproofing material itself, however, does not matter, since it represents a single whole with concrete.

"Eternal" methyl acrylate injection waterproofing

Penetrating waterproofing based on methyl acrylate gel is widely used in far abroad. This material refers to injectable compositions that penetrate deeply into the thickness of the building material in order to increase its waterproofing characteristics.

The process of using methyl acrylate injection waterproofing is as follows:

  • In the problem areas of concrete or brick walls, drill holes into which the gel is pumped.
  • After introduction into the building material, the methyl acrylate gel extends deep into the interior, displacing moisture and clogging the pores. Over time, the gel comes to the outer surface of the structure and completely covers it with a protective dense layer.

An additional advantage of methyl acrylate gel is its ability to penetrate into the areas adjacent to the construction site, strengthening and protecting them.

A distinctive feature of this injection material is its high rate of action. When sealing the leak in the basement with the injection of the gel, water after a few seconds ceases to leak into the room.

To create a reliable protective layer in the basement, first inject gel into the most problematic places, and then plaster the walls with a cement-sand mortar with gel additives.

Methyl acrylate gel is used for waterproofing cellars and other underground structures, including the underground.

However, penetrating waterproofing formulations based on this gel have a significant disadvantage - the high cost of work. To carry out this hydro isolation by the hands of the average consumer is beyond the power, since it requires a special pumping unit. Such equipment is available only in fairly large construction organizations. But, on the other hand, the use of injections of methyl acrylate gel will allow to get rid of problems with poor waterproofing for good.

Penetrating waterproofing - general information and applications, 3.8 out of 5 based on 4 ratings

Penetrating waterproofing is known for a long time. Even during the USSR special compositions based on sodium methylsiliconate were used, which impregnated the surfaces of concrete, stone and brickwork. As a result of the chemical reaction of the substance with carbon dioxide, an insoluble polymer gel was formed, which filled the pores of the material from the inside. Water resistance, strength and frost resistance of concrete or brickwork increased several times, and, accordingly, the service life of the material also increased. After all, the impact of moisture and unfavorable weather conditions is the reason for the rapid destruction of any building of concrete or brick. Previously, such waterproofing was practically not used in everyday life, for example, to protect the floor in the bathroom from possible leaks, as it is done now.

Recently, waterproofing penetrating action to protect the foundations, pools, bathroom, cellars and other structures that can constantly be exposed to harmful effects of moisture, in the professional environment is gaining increasing popularity. And for this there are very good reasons. Let's look at all the advantages of this waterproofing.

What are the advantages of penetrating waterproofing before roll and mastic materials?

The foundation is the most important element, the foundation of any structure. And if it is unreliably protected from the influence of adverse factors, the lifetime of the building will be significantly reduced. The effect of groundwater on an unprotected foundation of concrete can lead to the fact that this period will be reduced to several years. After that, the house will begin to gradually break down: in the premises humidity will reign, cracks will appear on the walls, mold will appear in the dark corners. Neighborhood with mokritsami and colonies of mold fungi can hardly be called pleasant, but it is still "flowers". The impact of groundwater on the foundation can lead to the collapse of the building - this is really serious.

To avoid a sad scenario, at the stage of erection of the foundation, you should take care of its reliable waterproofing. The use of special roll coatings and bituminous mastics does not completely solve the problem.

Disadvantages of mastics and roll materials in comparison with penetrating waterproofing:

  • Rolled and mastic materials protect the structure only on the application side;
  • Any breakage or damage to the protective layer can lead to the penetration of moisture into the surface of the concrete;
  • The presence of seams in roll insulation is its most vulnerable place, because the material has to be stacked in two layers to block the surface of the seams, and this significantly increases the cost and cost of work;
  • If the groundwater table is high enough, the service life of the roll insulation can be reduced to three to five years;
  • The main drawback of mastic waterproofing is also in its fragility;
  • If the work is carried out after the construction of the house, the insulation of the lubricating and rolling type requires mandatory digging of the external wall.

Penetrating waterproofing of the foundation easily solves all these issues. Why? Its action is based on a completely unique principle. The composition of dry building mortars for waterproofing can vary, but usually it is a cement mixture with the addition of quartz sand and chemicals that have the ability to penetrate deeply into the cellular structure of concrete. Where in the course of a chemical reaction crystals are formed, densely filling the pores of the material from the inside. These crystals become part of the concrete structure, compact it and prevent the penetration of water.

The main advantages of penetrating waterproofing:

  • During the construction phase, penetrating waterproofing of the foundation is provided by adding a dry mix of the Penetron Admix type (or other brands) to the concrete to be mixed. This changes the structure of concrete, turning it into a qualitatively different material. The foundation will be protected from the impact of groundwater throughout the entire thickness of the structure, regardless of the depth of their occurrence;
  • Such waterproofing acts as much as "living" concrete, because the material itself becomes waterproof;
  • The crystals formed inside the cells have the ability of "self-healing": if during the operation the materials still penetrate the water, the formation of the crystals is resumed, and the concrete "heals" itself;
  • Terms of construction or repair work are reduced, because When using penetrating waterproofing, there is no need to thoroughly dry the concrete. The mixture must be applied to a wet surface, and the higher its humidity, the faster chemical reactions occur with the participation of active components;
  • Concrete retains all the technical characteristics: setting speed, air permeability, mobility, frost resistance, and so on. It "breathes", remains vapor-permeable. Materials treated with waterproofing mixtures of a penetrating type significantly change only their characteristics of watertightness;
  • If waterproofing works are carried out after the construction phase is completed, isolation of this type will allow carrying out all the necessary manipulations without digging out the foundation of the house. The design can be processed from any side, including from the inside;
  • Penetrating waterproofing is effective for any direction of water movement and the level of its pressure;

Penetrating waterproofing of the entire surface of the masonry, all seams and joints prevents penetration of acid and alkaline corrosive media, microorganisms and fungi into the concrete; protects the materials from exposure to salt water, groundwater and sewage with different content of harmful components.

Disadvantages of penetrating waterproofing

Alas, the ideal protection of concrete structures against the impact of water, which destroys the material from the inside, has not yet been invented. Despite all its remarkable characteristics, penetrating waterproofing has its drawbacks. Let's talk about them in more detail:

  • Use materials of penetrating action as the only shield against the effects of moisture can not. Protection must be comprehensive. Need additional processing of seams and joints with special mixtures to prevent moisture from seeping through these vulnerabilities;
  • The cost of penetrating waterproofing is comparatively expensive, the actual price now varies between 2-5 dollars per 1 square meter, depending on the brand of the mixture;
  • Waterproofing both inside and outside the building requires complex preparatory work, for example, concrete walls must be absolutely clean, well-moistened, smooth, treated with acidic solutions. Waterproofing painted or plastered walls requires careful removal of old paint, fragments of plaster. As well as degreasing, cleaning with sand or pressure water under high pressure, processing with iron brushes. Full access to the capillary system of concrete should be opened, otherwise the waterproofing will prove ineffective;
  • The walls should be free of cracks and damages, therefore on old leached structures such waterproofing is not applied; small crevices and cracks are carefully sealed with cement mortar;
  • The surface of concrete is thoroughly cleaned of mold, oil stains, soil and even dust;
  • Penetrating waterproofing is inefficient for walls made of aerated concrete and foam concrete, because The size of the cells in the material structure is too large, and the crystals can not close them tightly from the inside;
  • Penetrating mixtures are inefficient on the surface of the brickwork, because the brick lacks the element necessary for the chemical reaction. Waterproofing mixtures can only be treated with joint surfaces, because in masonry mortar there are products of hydration of cement. The problem of masonry waterproofing is usually solved by external protection, where rolls and coatings are used;
  • The solution for processing the wall of the floor should be used within half an hour, because it is prepared in small portions - you can not add water to the finished mixture;
  • The treated walls and the floor surface should be well protected from drying out and exposure to low temperatures. The premises must be warm, and the walls and the floor surface are either covered with a film or thoroughly moistened within the next two weeks.

Important! Penetrating waterproofing of brickwork is carried out only by qualified workers, with the use of special equipment.

As they say, there is no perfection in the world. But it is the penetrating waterproofing that is the most reliable and effective means of protecting any concrete structures for industrial and household purposes: swimming pools, bathroom floors, foundations, cellars, hydraulic structures, mines, tanks, piers, etc. And it remains so for many years.

Application area

Apply a mixture of penetrating action wherever protection of concrete structures is required from the effects of moisture: sewage and groundwater, sea water, etc. This protection has shown itself in various areas of construction. Chemicals that are part of dry mixtures are safe for human health, because they are widely used for waterproofing wells, reservoirs with drinking water, swimming pools, bathroom facilities.

Mixtures are effective when applied even from within buildings. For example, effective penetrating waterproofing basement for protection from groundwater, and even without additional application to the walls of the basement. This reduces the cost and duration of repair work, because the foundation does not need to be dug out, thoroughly dried, as is done in the case of roll and mastic waterproofing systems.

The non-toxicity of mixtures allows them to be used in residential premises: in the bathroom to protect walls and floors from harmful effects of moisture, in the living areas of the basement floor, and so on.

Important! Any finishing work should be postponed for a while while the crystallization process takes place. Apply any kind of plaster, including gypsum, or other decorative finishing materials to the surface treated with waterproofing compounds, not earlier than 30 days.

If you do not maintain the right time before the finishing works, the finish will be hopelessly damaged.

Popular building mixtures for penetrating waterproofing

Penetron

Penetron Penetron is a patented building mix that has been used for more than 50 years in construction around the world. This is a special cement mixture, which includes quartz sand and active chemical components. Its market price is slightly higher than the average for competitors: the cost of 1 kg of dry mix for today is 4-5 dollars. And the consumption of dry mix for processing concrete walls, floors, foundations of buildings is about 1 kg per square meter. In general, "Penetron" - a pleasure not cheap, although the reviews say that it is worth this money. Of course, in the event that a quality patented mixture is actually acquired, not a cheap counterfeit, which is often found on the Russian market.

Building mixtures of the brand are widely used for industrial and domestic purposes. In the home, the protection of swimming pools, cellars, foundations and bathroom provides excellent results.

You can find out more about Penetron by watching the video. In the video, the principle of the penetrating waterproofing is described in sufficient detail. Also from the video you can find out about the rules for applying a waterproofing mixture, about the preparatory process before starting work, and about all subsequent stages.

Important! It is better to purchase building mixtures of the Penetron family from reliable sellers, because this brand is most often the object of falsification.

Crystallisol

The principle of operation of all waterproofing mixtures is the same: the active substances penetrate the intracellular structure of concrete, where a chemical reaction occurs with the calcium salts present in it. Further, crystals grow that tightly close the pores of the material, ensuring its waterproofness. Crystallizol acts on the same principle, and its composition also includes river or quartz sand, special cement and patented chemicals that the manufacturer prefers to keep secret. A mixture of Crystallisol is also applied exactly to a moistened concrete surface.

Of course, all mixtures for penetrating insulation are surely compared with "Penetron", which can be understood - for quite a long time he simply did not have any worthy analogues. However, reviews of professionals say that Crystallizol, which, incidentally, produce in Russia, is almost inferior to the famous brand. And in some ways even surpasses. Say, Penetron has no analogues of the plaster waterproofing mix, which is used to repair and restore destroyed concrete structures, and which Russian Crystallisol can boast of. Well, of course, a sparing price. Mixtures of the group Crystallizol are produced in Russia, because their market value is lower than that of Penetron. The cost of 1 kg of dry mixture Crystallizol for today is approximately $ 1.

Crystallisol mixtures are used to protect any concrete structures exposed to permanent or temporary harmful effects of moisture. Good results are provided by the protection of swimming pools, bathrooms, any water reservoirs, foundations, walls and floors in basements below groundwater level.

More about the waterproofing materials "Crystallizol" you can learn from the video. In a long enough video in detail and available to talk about the benefits of penetrating waterproofing of this brand.

Lakhta

Another popular and high-quality Russian brand is Lakhta. They have quite a wide range of dry building compounds that perform a variety of tasks.
