  • Gates. It is not uncommon to see a mailbox attached directly to a gate made of metal or wood. Here you will also need to make holes in advance on the back panel and on the gate. Nuts and bolts are used as fasteners.
  • Wall installation. As in the two previous methods, holes should be made both on the wall of the mailbox and on the wall. The structure is secured with small anchors or dowels - everything will depend on the thickness and type of wall surface.

    (17 ratings, average: 4,35 out of 5)

    The mailbox is an important part exterior decor both private and apartment buildings. Beautiful and original, it is able to transform the appearance of the local area, place important accents and ensure the safety of received correspondence. The best option will make a mailbox with your own hands.

    Space for imagination

    Anyone can make this household item. For this it is necessary decide on the model and materials, find everything you need and allocate some free time. With your own hands and efforts you can bring to life both simpler options and make a real work of art. Materials and sizes can be any. The main thing is to foresee them in advance. The dimensions of the mailbox should allow you to store mail of any size. It is advisable to make mailboxes for a private home from harder and more protected materials. Metal or wood work well.

    Types of mailboxes

    Mailbox comes in different shapes, models and sizes. The most common are classic, English and American styles.

    Classic looks like a small rectangular box with a slot for correspondence. Usually attached to fences and walls of houses. Most often found in the post-Soviet space and made of metal or wood.

    IN English style - a metal box that is either mounted into the wall or made in the form of a separate pole.

    American The option is installed on a separate support and has a special flag to notify the required shipment.

    Original mailboxes can be made of any material, paper, cardboard, bottles or household items and take any shape depending on the wishes of the author.

    Execution options

    Designer and unusual solutions always look interesting and highlight individuality. You can make interesting mailboxes from already unnecessary items. Below are the most original options that can be supplemented and improved.

    From a plastic bottle

    To make it you need to take a 2 liter plastic bottle. We cut off the neck from it. You can cut it to the end and then attach it in the form of a door with ropes. You can cut it off not all the way so that the back part stays on the bottle. You can secure it at your destination with bolts or ropes. You can decorate it to suit any taste. For additional security, a canopy can be installed above the box. This would be a great option for an original mailbox that probably won't receive a lot of press.

    Made from cardboard and fabric

    For this option you will need a sheet of thick cardboard, a pattern (it can be found on the Internet), fabric for decoration, accessories, and glue. All parts should be cut out of cardboard. This will be the base of the box. We cover the cut parts with fabric on both sides. This can be done using non-woven fabric and an iron. Then all the parts need to be sewn together, leaving one side (the door) sewn on one side. We attach Velcro to it.

    From unnecessary items

    A beautiful mailbox can be made from unnecessary items. Any items can be used for which only a flight of imagination is sufficient.

    For example, a cuckoo clock can look like a wooden mailbox. To do this, you need to clean them, equip them with a lock and decorate them. The place where the cuckoo jumped out will be a hole for correspondence. And instead of a dial, you can organize a door for a recess.

    An old and faulty system unit is also capable of performing these functions if all parts are removed from it, leaving only metal structure. For decoration, it must be primed and then paint and other details will easily fall on it.

    Wooden box

    • wooden blocks;
    • plywood sheets;
    • wood screws;
    • hinges for doors;
    • varnish or paint;
    • a metal sheet;
    • screwdriver;
    • hacksaw or jigsaw.

    Manufacturing:

    Then the wooden box should be carefully sanded and decorated to your taste. This is an example of a standard mailbox. Based on this, it can be supplemented and modified to suit your taste and the exterior of the yard.

    Metal box

    Required materials and tools:

    • tin sheets;
    • Bulgarian;
    • drill;
    • rivets.

    Metal mailboxes are the most difficult to manufacture. Here, in addition to the idea, you also need to have minimal skills in working with metal.

    Manufacturing using the example of an American mailbox:

    Anyone could make a mailbox with their own hands. It is only important to objectively evaluate your skills and abilities in creating such things and choose a model that the craftsman can make. You can make your own mailboxes using simple circuits, even beginners can do it. But more complex forms require sufficient experience and knowledge from the manufacturer.

    The easiest way would be to make a mailbox from wood or plywood; the main thing is not to forget to saturate the parts with an antiseptic.

    What is important to consider when starting to create a mailbox?

    For those who have not yet chosen what their future mailbox will look like, it is important to determine the fundamental parameters before creating it:

    1. What material will it be made of?
    2. What will its dimensions be?
    3. What design to choose for it.

    After the choice is made, you can begin drawings, purchasing necessary materials and directly to the creation of the product.

    Wooden mailbox - manufacturing

    For beginners, the easiest way is to make a mailbox very easy pattern from an affordable and easy-to-process material - wood. The process of making this type of mailbox is described below.

    A homemade wooden mailbox will require the following materials and tools:

    • a wooden beam made of inexpensive wood (pine, for example) at least 30 cm long;
    • dense plywood sheet with good moisture resistance;
    • substances for the protective treatment of wood;
    • self-tapping screws for wooden products;
    • two hinges for the door;
    • door lock and hinge;
    • metal sheet 30 cm long;
    • screwdriver;
    • hacksaw or jigsaw.

    From wooden beam you need to prepare four guide rails, the thickness of which will be 1 cm, width - 2 cm and length - 30 cm. Then you should make plywood blanks for the walls of the future mailbox. The dimensions of the front and back walls will be 30 cm in length and 25 cm in width. The side panels, there should be only two of them, will have the following dimensions: length 30 cm, width 6 cm. The dimensions of the top and bottom panels should be 25 cm wide and 6 cm long.

    Since all these parts are wooden, even before assembling the mailbox, they should be treated with substances that will ensure long-term protection of the finished product from rain, snow and insects. This will allow the future mailbox for a private home to be used for a very long time.

    After all the main parts are ready and processed, you can begin assembling the product. All four guide rails must be connected to the back wall, bottom and side panels. To do this, it is best to use prepared screws and a screwdriver.

    Although there is another option - you can put all the parts on glue, in which case it will be better if you use good wood glue.

    The top panel of a wooden mailbox should contain a slot into which the postman can drop letters, newspapers and other correspondence. A skilled craftsman will easily make the required gap in the middle one centimeter wide. There is a simpler recipe for beginners. The remaining plywood panel 25 cm long and 6 cm wide can be cut using a jigsaw (or hacksaw) and made into two panels 25 cm long and 2.5 cm wide. Thus, the master will be able to make a 1 cm wide slot by attaching these two thin panels to the finished frame on top. This simple technique will make it easier to make a homemade mailbox.

    Since the press slot is located in the upper part of the structure, it is reasonable to provide a canopy above it, which would protect all newspapers and letters from possible precipitation. Such a protective panel can be made from a metal plate. Here it is important to adjust its dimensions well to the dimensions of the mailbox itself, and then attach the metal cornice to the top of the product with hinges. It is important to take into account that the cornice itself does not interfere with the postman throwing mail into the slot.

    The front wall is secured last, since it will serve as the mailbox door. With its help, the owner will be able to collect all correspondence from it. To do this, use prepared loops and a lock. The loops should be small and not bulky. At the same time, they need to be very durable and ensure quiet and reliable movement of the door itself. The padlock hinges are attached on the opposite side, one on the door and the other on the side panel.

    You can already ready product improve by installing an alarm system that will notify owners when mail is received. To do this, you need to make another bottom plywood strip and attach it at the bottom, forming a double bottom. The second plywood is attached to the springs. Between these springs, contact plates from the telephone switch should be placed. The connecting wires from the box need to be laid into the house to the battery and lamp, the latter will light up every time correspondence gets inside. This simple mechanism will always notify the owners of the arrival of mail.

    Models of homemade mailboxes

    Mailboxes come in a variety of shapes and designs. These products can vary in shape and cost, they are made from all kinds of materials, and the design can only be limited by the imagination and skill of the person who creates them.

    Wooden mailbox. This is a very simple and affordable option for a mailbox. Depending on the skills of the craftsman, such boxes can be very simple in execution, or they can be carved and show the pinnacle of skill if they are made by professionals who have been working with wood for a long time.

    You can build a simple mailbox from plastic bottle and two metal brackets.

    Mailbox made from a plastic bottle. This is a small and compact option; large packages of correspondence will not fit here, but it will always look original. Moreover, it is very easy to make such mailboxes from a plastic bottle with your own hands. To do this, place a plastic container in a metal or plastic pipe appropriate size and secure it in a place accessible to the postman.

    Metal mailbox. To make such a device, you need to be able to work with metal and use more complex tools - drill, welding, grinder, etc. However, such a box will last a long time, so the time and effort spent on it is worth it.

    Mailbox made of plexiglass or plastic. This is not always easy to do because plastic parts will have to be secured with glue or sealant. Here it is important to choose a good substance for gluing, otherwise the master will have to tinker with such a model for a long time.

    Mail box made from a watch. For this option you will need an old cuckoo clock. The clock mechanism should be disassembled, and the front part of the former clock should be secured to a wooden box. In this case, the hole from which the cuckoo used to jump out should coincide with the hole in the wooden base box. This will be the slot into which the postman can drop correspondence. At the same time, do not forget about the door through which the owners can pick up newspapers and letters.

    Hello, dear readers. Today I would like to tell you about how you can make a mailbox with your own hands and from scrap materials.

    Making a mailbox with your own hands

    Basically, this is my own experience. However, let's talk about everything in order.
    After manufacturing and installing a new metal gate we found ourselves without a mailbox (it was dismantled along with the old wooden one).

    For some time the mail was inserted into the gap between the gate and the gate. In the end, my wife got tired of it and set a clear task - to make a new mailbox.

    After thinking a little, I came to the following decision.
    I had several boxes from an old wardrobe in my shed. These boxes were made of planed boards, plywood and fiberboard.

    It was decided to use them as donors for the new mailbox.

    The only thing that didn't suit me was the size of these boxes.

    So I carefully disassembled them and then, sawing the blanks to the sizes I needed, assembled a new base for my mailbox.

    The rectangular frame was assembled using nails, although it is better, of course, to use thin and fairly long self-tapping screws for these purposes.

    Well, okay, because the back wall made of plywood gives additional rigidity to my structure. By the way, I used a drill and a jigsaw to cut out the slot for letters and newspapers.

    First, I marked the hole, then I drilled a hole on the marking contour using an electric drill (the diameter of the drill was selected so that it was slightly larger than the width of the jigsaw blade), after which I used a jigsaw to cut out the hole along the marked contour. It turned out quite neat. The edge of the crack was additionally treated with sandpaper.

    Now a few words about how my mailbox door is made. It is also made of plywood, and in order to prevent the lid from warping or turning inside out, I provided it with a kind of frame on the inside.

    I got the slats for the frame from the same boards from the boxes, unraveling them using circular saw and additionally processed with a plane. So that at the joints of the slats everything is in at its best, I used a miter box for filing (cool thing by the way).

    I hung the door on the mailbox using hinges and small screws found in the barn.

    Naturally, I tightened the screws using a screwdriver (although you can also use a screwdriver, but this is quite boring). The loops are a little big, but I didn’t think it was advisable to buy more suitable ones.

    I made the door latch from an old door latch, beveled it as needed and secured it to my new mailbox using self-tapping screws.

    I secured the box to the fence, positioning it in such a way that the hole for letters and newspapers would fit into the gap between the boards (fortunately, at one time I made a non-solid fence). The entire structure was attached to the fence pickets through the back wall of the box with self-tapping screws. The final result in the photo:

    I made this mailbox with my own hands in a couple of hours.

    By the way, yesterday the postman dropped the first letter in it!

Or you can approach the solution creatively and make a spacious wooden mailbox with your own hands. If you choose the second option, then this article is for you.

    To make a mailbox you will need:

    • materials: waterproof 19 mm plywood, larch boards 32x150 mm, wood glue for external use;
    • tools: adjustable square, hacksaw, drill/driver, 4mm drill bit, countersink bit, stainless steel screws, two edge hinges and long screws.

    How to make a mailbox frame?

    It is better to make the back panel and bottom of the structure from waterproof plywood; this guarantees a long period of operation of the box itself and reliable protection of its contents from atmospheric moisture.

    Using a sharp hacksaw, cut two pieces of plywood measuring 15x30 cm - this will be the bottom of the box, and 30x50 cm - this will be the back panel.

    Fold the parts so that the back wall rests with its short end on the bottom, and draw a line along it, marking the junction. Drill three holes, placing them along the center of the outlined part. Apply a layer of wood glue to the joint, connect the parts and fasten with three screws using a screwdriver.

    Please note: first of all, you should screw in the middle screw, then check whether the parts are evenly adjacent to each other and continue fixing along the edges of the structure.

    This sequence will help to easily avoid distortion in the connection.

    We continue to assemble the mailbox frame. Next in line are the racks that will hold the front and side panels.

    How to make your own mailbox

    The width of the racks should be at least 3-4 cm, and the length in height should be 10 cm lower than the height of the back panel, that is, 40 cm. We will also cut them out of waterproof plywood.

    We mount the racks in the usual way: we make a hole for the screws, glue the joint and screw the parts tightly.

    The frame is ready.

    What and how to cover a mailbox?

    The lining of the mailbox has not only a functional, but also an aesthetic component. The design must have a pleasant appearance, because this is the object that sees you off and greets you at the entrance to the house every day.

    We offer larch boards as cladding.

    Cut with a hacksaw required amount facing elements and using a countersink drill, make several holes around the perimeter. To begin, place the first part on the glue, and then tighten it with screws. In the same way, gradually sheathe both side panels.

    Each front panel piece will require slight adjustments to ensure that the edges of the front panel pieces line up correctly with the edges of the side panel pieces.

    Using a square, mark the angle that should be transferred to the front panel boards and give them the required shape using a hacksaw.

    Pay special attention to the manufacture of the mailbox cover.

    Firstly, it must match the thickness of the front and back walls, and secondly, it is a moving part of the structure and must work flawlessly.

    Use an adjustable square to select the front panel correct angle for the outer part of the lid. Cut off the narrow part and sand it with sandpaper. Connect the resulting part with the beveled board as usual, glue and screws. We fasten the third plank using a support block.

    All that remains is to cut off the protruding back part and the lid is ready. Connect the box and the lid by attaching the edge hinges to them with screws.

    A voluminous and beautiful wooden mailbox that you made with your own hands will become a source of special pride for you. Attach it in a convenient place and the problem of print spam is solved.
