Do-it-yourself construction and repairs

Window fittings design. Plastic windows - fittings and window, anti-sagging system, device for balcony doors. Basic techniques for adjusting the sash yourself

Window fittings for plastic windows are designed to maintain the required temperature in the room and ensure forced air circulation. A complete set of high-quality parts ensures reliable fixation of the transom to the base along the entire contact surface, eliminating the occurrence of drafts.

  • closing-opening (both in the horizontal and vertical plane);
  • tight pressing of the sash to the base;
  • the ability to ventilate the room without opening the window by loosening the fixation of the sash to the base;
  • preventing third parties from entering the apartment from the outside;
  • preventing spontaneous window opening;
  • preventing children from attempting to open the window without permission.

When ordering a fastening system for plastic windows yourself, you should know what kind of fittings are available. Usually it is produced in the form of separate parts that are connected to each other in a certain way into modules for various purposes.

Types of fitting modules:

  • modules designed to connect the base and the sash (hinges, canopies);
  • locking modules securing the sash to the base;
  • rotary mechanism module;
  • handle regulating the positions of the locking modules;
  • decorative parts and additional details.

You should always start equipping with new elements by choosing the profile of the double-glazed window fittings for PVC windows.

Classification of fittings

To classify fastening elements in window systems, the following parameters are used:

  • method of opening the transom;
  • type of sash;
  • transom opening vector;
  • sash mass;
  • material of fastening elements.

PVC windows have three type of door opening:

  1. Along the vertical axis. For this method, rotary fittings are used.
  2. Along the vertical axis with the possibility of tilting the window from the top inward to a certain distance. In this case, tilt-and-turn elements are used.
  3. Along a horizontal axis with an opening of 180 degrees. To adjust the sash, a transom locking mechanism is used, which, in turn, can be equipped with a central lock, a lever mechanism and an electric drive.

Tilt and turn opening.

The fittings are also selected according to sash type, which are: rectangular, triangular, round, trapezoidal, arched and individual configuration.

By opening vector The fittings are divided into right and left.

An important factor for purchasing reliable fittings is the weight of the window. The main load is borne by the hinges, which are capable of handling loads from 80 to 160 kg. By load bearing capacity, fittings are divided into the following types:

  • for light sashes weighing up to 20 kg;
  • for sashes of average weight up to 40 kg;
  • for heavy sashes up to 65 kg;
  • for extra-heavy sashes weighing more than 65 kg.

For the manufacture of fittings for PVC windows, the following are used: materials:

  • steel;
  • aluminum;
  • brass;
  • plastic;
  • combination of materials.

Window fittings details

In order to independently understand all the nuances and varieties of elements of the PVC window locking system, you need to study the list of main parts:

  • The central element of the window locking system is the handle. Basically, handles are produced as a standard product that allows you to adjust the sash vertically and horizontally. There are removable handles that are recommended for use in homes where small children live; in this case, you can also use handles with a lock. In addition, there are handles with a lock, but, as practice shows, they cannot always serve as reliable protection against restless children;

Children's castle.
  • Corner strips are designed to transmit movement from the handle to the locking elements through the corners (mounted in special grooves in the profile);

  • The locking strips are made in the form of a guide with clamps that secure the transom to the base;

  • To tilt the sash in the vertical direction, scissors are used, which are an element of two parts, one of which is fixed on the base, and the second is movable;

Scissors.
  • To hold the transom to the base and ensure smooth opening and closing of the window, hinges are used. They are divided into overhead, mortise and screw-in. Anti-burglary hinges are also used, which cannot be dismantled when the transom is fixed at the base;
  • To strengthen the fixation of the sash when opening vertically, auxiliary scissors are used, which duplicate the work of the main products;
  • To ensure the process of tilting the transom, an auxiliary corner strip is used;
  • The striker is responsible for the fixing moment of the base and sash;

  • Using the trunnion, you can change the degree of fixation of the base and transom;
  • Decorative elements are used to disguise the main details.

How to choose the right one

Determining on your own which fittings are best for plastic windows is not difficult. When studying suitable products, you should adhere to the following rules:

  1. At the first stage, you need to decide how the window will open, because... The choice of appropriate right or left awnings depends on this. It is also important to think about what functions will be required when changing the position of the transom, whether it is necessary to equip it with anti-burglary fittings for a plastic window;
  2. The second step is to take measurements of the perimeter of the sash in order to further select fittings of the appropriate size;
  3. When replacing fittings on plastic windows, when the owner does the work with his own hands, it is better to give preference to well-known brands that provide reliability and a long warranty;
  4. Fittings for plastic windows and doors are made only from metal, because... plastic parts are short-lived and quickly lose their consumer properties;
  5. Cheap analogues are usually characterized by insufficient surface treatment, and therefore, when studying samples, it is recommended to check the surface of the products for smoothness, absence of burrs and dents;
  6. Reliable companies, when producing accessories, always provide at least two technological holes for installing the part.

Popular manufacturers

Fittings are manufactured by hundreds of companies, but most installers recommend purchasing products from top European companies. The ranking of the best manufacturers is headed by the German factories Roto, Siegenia, Winkhaus and the Austrian company Maco. It is pointless to compare Chinese analogues with original products from well-known brands - the quality of Asian manufacturers does not yet reach the leaders.

The products of the listed companies have individual characteristics:

  • Firm Roto provides the reliability of its own products with a ten-year guarantee. The fittings produced in Roto factories are distinguished by their wide variety and perfect compatibility between individual elements. The products of this plant are considered the most affordable among the leaders.
  • Austrian Maco specializes in the supply of hidden fittings, which are designed for installation inside the sashes and frames. In addition, Maco produces anti-burglary structures that provide six degrees of protection against unauthorized actions of third parties. Maco products are among the most expensive, so using this hardware for installation on standard windows is impractical.
  • Company Siegenia, in addition to universal products designed for assembling windows from any material (metal, plastic, wood), is ready to produce custom-made fittings for openings of non-standard size and configuration. The products of this company are in demand in individual houses, country cottages and even castles, but it should be remembered that replacing old fittings in a regular window with new ones from Siegenia can be very expensive. Comparing prices with other manufacturers will not be in favor of an individual approach.
  • Factory Winkhaus patented the original roller locking system for windows. The presence of Winkhaus fittings allows you to adjust the position of the transom and completely close the window smoothly, without much effort or jerking.

In addition to these manufacturers, there are companies from Turkey, Slovakia, Russia and Poland on the fastener market, but there is no reliable information about the quality of the products of these factories yet, due to the short service life of the installed locking systems.

Installation and adjustment of fittings

Before you begin to independently assemble the fittings on the sash and base, you need to acquire the necessary tools. For installation you will need:

  • Screwdriver.
  • Special furniture key.
  • Pliers.

Changing individual elements or the entire system is not difficult, the main condition is to follow the sequence of actions, adhering to the assembly diagram.

Fittings for PVC windows are installed in the following order:

  1. The transom is removed from the frame.
  2. All fasteners are dismantled (to make it easier to change fittings, it is recommended to take several photographs of the assembled mechanism).
  3. New mechanisms are laid out in such a way that the arrangement of parts corresponds to the installation diagram.
  4. The corner strips are attached first.
  5. The next step is to install the locking strips.
  6. Both types of scissors are secured.
  7. Place hinges on the base and transom.
  8. The transom is installed in its place in the frame.
  9. Installation of strikers is carried out.
  10. Secure the handle and all additional parts.
  11. By changing the position of the adjusting screws, the clamping mechanism is adjusted.
  12. All metal parts are treated with a special lubricant.
  13. Install decorative trims.

Purchasing products from reliable manufacturers will allow you to independently assemble the locking mechanism of the window system without problems and with high quality.

Fittings for plastic windows and structures made of wooden or aluminum profiles are represented by an impressive range of mechanisms. It not only provides various ways to open the sashes, but also allows window owners to select additional options at their discretion. These systems are constantly being improved, thereby improving their performance. Since the appearance on the Russian market of products from profile systems, the range of fittings has expanded due to new devices that have made the process of operating windows of all types more comfortable.

What exactly are window fittings responsible for?

If, read more about on OknaTrade, are sometimes identified with the skeleton of windows, then the fittings in this case are appropriate to compare with the internal organs that are responsible for the performance of this entire complex system. In confirmation of this, modern fittings can today provide the following important functions:
  • access restriction – burglary resistance;
  • child safety;
  • ventilation of interior spaces in the most convenient way;
  • tightness of the structure;
  • holding the valves in the open position.
When designing and manufacturing fittings, manufacturers think not only about its functionality, but also take care of durability, gradually increasing the number of complete operating cycles, and the aesthetic appeal of these systems.

Hidden fittings for windows

These systems were developed primarily for those who care about aesthetics, but the designers managed to improve the performance characteristics of windows equipped with such fittings during the creation process. Hidden type mechanisms allow:
  • improve sound and heat insulation;
  • increase burglary resistance;
  • reduce the risk of sashes sagging;
  • improve tightness;
  • use sashes with heavy weight.
This fitting is controlled using a rotary handle and differs from classic systems in that the hinges are out of sight, as they are completely hidden between the sash and the frame. Such mechanisms are compatible with anti-burglary fittings and are suitable for mounting tilt-and-turn and casement windows.

Fittings for sliding systems

These mechanisms are fundamentally different from swing and tilt-and-turn opening systems, however, some types have similar components that provide identical functions. For example, tilting the doors for ventilation. The principle of operation of sliding mechanisms is contained in the name itself - the doors are moved to the side along guides with the help of running elements. Currently, several systems are actively used:

Unlike systems for sliding wardrobes, all sliding window mechanisms must ensure a tight fit of the sashes. Therefore, all such systems are equipped with seals and clamping devices.

Accessories for child safety

To protect the child, a complete replacement of fittings is not required - windows can be quickly equipped with various devices at the discretion of the owners. Currently, to prevent children from falling out of open doors, the following are used:
  • handle with a lock - this device fixes the sash in a closed or tilted position, and a child without a key will not be able to open it independently (instead of a lock, the handle can be equipped with a locking button);
  • opening limiters - connect the sash with an impost or frame profile using a short cable, which makes it impossible to swing it open;
  • sash opening blocker - a compact locking device that is attached to the bottom of the frame and allows you to tilt the sash for ventilation;
  • A window chain is similar to a short-throw door device that is usually installed at the top of the window.
Sometimes, to ensure safety, it is recommended to integrate a device into the sash. However, this is dubious advice that does not guarantee anything. After all, modern children learn new systems very quickly, so only the devices listed above are considered effective, which a child cannot open under any circumstances.

Anti-burglary fittings

Effective protection against penetration by unauthorized persons can only be ensured through the integrated use of special profiles, double-glazed windows and mechanisms. The following elements of anti-burglary fittings for window protection are currently available:
  • handle with lock;
  • mushroom trunnions;
  • protective plates on the rotating mechanism;
  • titanium strikers;
  • reinforcing corner for the bottom hinge.
At the same time, you must be aware that even the most effective set of security elements will not protect against hacking, but will only complicate this procedure and require the attacker to use expensive professional tools.

Accessories for roof windows

The fittings for external opening of the valves are somewhat different from traditional mechanisms. After all, these systems must not only provide pressure and swing the sash, but also hold it in the open position, as well as the ability to rotate and wash the outer glass. As a result, the following are included:
  • multifunctional handles that secure the sash in the selected position;
  • special friction hinges located on the central axis and allowing rotation of 180 degrees;
  • lifts;
  • built-in valves.

Also for roof windows, hinges for tilting along the top axis can be used. Models with a combined opening method are becoming increasingly common. Due to the location features, it is recommended to use automatic electric drive systems for structures of this type.

Since Finnish windows are a design with paired sashes, they require an additional mechanism to open them simultaneously. Inter-frame couplers act as a synchronizing device, through which the sashes are movably connected to each other. Also, wooden Finnish windows are equipped with screw-in hinges instead of hinged ones.

Fittings with antibacterial coating

After such fittings for windows appeared, PVC structures became even more hygienic. To produce this series, a technology is used, the essence of which is to apply it to the surface October 1, 2016
Specialization: professional in the field of construction and repair (full cycle of finishing work, both internal and external, from sewerage to electrical and finishing work), installation of window structures. Hobbies: see the column "SPECIALIZATION AND SKILLS"

Even if you do not plan to install PVC structures at a professional level, it is simply necessary to know what elements the window consists of, how the mechanism for closing/opening the sash works, or, for example, what the glazing may be like.

Having such information, you will be able to choose a product that meets your key needs, select the necessary equipment (alas, I would not recommend trusting 100% managers of window companies), as well as supervise and competently accept the work of the installation team.

Well, if you want to install windows yourself - even if only in your apartment - then you definitely cannot do without knowledge of “window anatomy”. And so that information does not have to be collected bit by bit from specialized forums and websites of manufacturing companies, in this article I will provide a kind of “summary”. Of course, it won’t be possible to cover everything, but basic knowledge is enough to speak “the same language” with managers and foremen.

General diagram of the window structure

A metal-plastic window is quite complex, especially when compared with traditional wooden windows. On the other hand, if you figure out the principle by which such products are designed and understand the basic principles, then most of the questions will disappear by themselves.

The key feature of windows based on PVC profiles is their modular structure. This means that the product is assembled from separate blocks. The number and relative arrangement of these blocks remains unchanged, but the blocks themselves can be almost anything - naturally, within the framework of existing technological limitations.

The basic elements that make up the window structure include:

  1. Frame from a profile system with internal metal reinforcement. The basis of the frame is a window frame, into which either glazing can be installed immediately (the “fixed” version) or a sash/sash (the opening version).
  2. Filling the opening. In most cases, the filling is represented by glazing (most often a double-glazed window, less often - single glass or several separate glasses). Sometimes opaque materials are used to fill the frame or sash, the leader among which is the sandwich panel. The main advantage of the opaque filling is considered to be good thermal insulation, which is ensured by the low thermal conductivity of the sandwich.

  1. Accessories– a set of mechanisms that ensures the opening and closing of the structure in different modes. The fittings include hinges, a handle, drive elements, shut-off valves (keep plates on the frame + cylinders on the sash), as well as system parts (microventilation, step-by-step ventilation).
  2. Parts required for installation- this is, first of all, a window sill, a drainage strip, flashings, and sometimes slopes and special profiles (extensions, connectors, base, etc.). Here the assortment largely depends on the design of the junction unit, so the equipment for different windows can vary greatly.
  3. Finally, I would put accessories for plastic windows into a separate group.. These are ventilation valves, mosquito nets, roller blinds, blinds, etc. - in general, everything that is not included in the window structure itself and can be dismantled without losing the main functionality.

Here I have simply listed a set of main window parts, and below I will consider each of the elements in detail.

Part 1. Profile system

The basis of the window structure is the profile system. A window profile is a panel made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) with galvanized steel reinforcement installed inside. The profile panels are made hollow - a large number of internal chambers ensure low thermal conductivity, which helps reduce energy losses through the frame and sash of the window.

The multi-chamber structure of the profile also performs another function - ensuring sufficient rigidity of the frame. High-quality windows (here we are talking about five- or six-chamber class “A” products) are much less susceptible to temperature deformation and are much better able to withstand wind and weight loads.

The following frame elements are made from PVC profiles:

  1. Frame is a part that secures the window in the window opening. The outer side of the frame profile is relatively flat (with the exception of the groove for installing the stand element), and on the inner side the structure usually provides one protrusion - an overlay. The overlay is located on the street side and is used as a support for pressing the sash or double-glazed window. Drainage holes are almost always made on the frame profile, opening outward - through them, condensation moisture is removed from the chambers.

  1. A sash is an opening element of a window. The sash profile is usually smaller and lighter than the frame profile, and it is most often made in the shape of the letter “Z”. One protrusion is intended, like the frame, for fixing the glass unit, the second is for pressing it to the frame.

As a rule, in all profile elements intended to provide clamping, a special groove is made into which a polymer elastic seal is mounted. Sealing elements are often made removable, which allows them to be replaced as they wear out.

  1. If everything is more or less clear with the frame and sash, then other elements may raise questions. So, very often I am asked what is an impost in plastic windows. An impost is a profile element that is used to divide a frame into several segments. The cross-section of the impost resembles the letter “T” - the side overlaps allow you to either fix it on the left and right side of the double-glazed window, or install two sashes.

  1. Not everyone likes the option of a double-hung window with an impost - some prefer large open openings. In this case, a shtulp (false impost) is used to join the two sashes. This is a special part that is mounted on one of the sashes and performs the functions of a fusion for pressing.
  2. Another important element of the profile system is the glazing bead, which presses the glazing against the overlap of the frame or sash. The glazing bead is equipped with special latches (legs), which are inserted into the glazing bead groove of the profile and securely fixed in it.

These are the so-called main profiles that are used to make the window itself. There are also additional elements, but I will tell you about them when I describe the assembly of the structure to the opening.

A few words should be said about the appearance of the products. Traditionally, the profile is produced in white, but if you want to match the window to the color of the furniture set or wallpaper, you can also find a colored version.

Colored windows are produced either by painting the profile in the mass (pigment is added to the molten PVC), or by lamination - gluing the surfaces with a durable polymer film with a pattern and texture. The best result is obtained by combining these methods: this way, even when opening a laminated window, the white side surfaces of the profile do not catch your eye.

Part 2. Glazing

Double-glazed window installation

Since a window is, by definition, a translucent structure, almost exclusively glass filling is installed in it. The exception is the side windows of balconies, the lower parts of balcony doors, etc. – there, as I noted above, a sandwich panel can be used as filling.

The most common glazing option is to install double-glazed windows:

  1. A double-glazed window is a structure of two (or more) glasses, which are hermetically connected to each other using a spacer frame.
  2. The distance frame (distance) is made of plastic or aluminum and filled with a special composition that absorbs moisture. Thanks to the action of this composition, condensation does not form on the glass unit from the inside.

  1. An important parameter is the width of the spacer frame. In the production of PVC windows, frames from 10 to 20 mm are usually used (standard is 16 mm). If you make the distance smaller, then the thermal insulation characteristics will decrease due to the air layer being too thin, and if it is larger, then convective heat transfer will begin inside the double-glazed window, and this will also negatively affect energy efficiency.
  2. Another purpose of the gap between the glasses is sound insulation. The best result in this case is provided by the use of two spacers of different widths (for example, 10 and 16 mm) - this way the sound passes through the most heterogeneous medium and loses a lot in volume.

Glass types

And yet, the main characteristics of a double-glazed window are ensured through the use of different glasses. You can view the configuration options using the table below:

Glass Function
Standard The cheapest and most common type of glass.

For the manufacture of double-glazed windows, products with transparency M0 and M1 are used.

Thickness – 4, 6 or 8 mm.

There are no additional properties.

Energy saving (low emission, Low-E) On the inside, such glass is covered with a thin film of metal oxides - tin or silver.

The oxide film effectively reflects infrared radiation, due to which a significant part of the heat generated by heating devices remains indoors.

When in contact with oxygen, the energy-saving coating quickly collapses, so it is placed inside a double-glazed window.

Sun protection To protect against excess sunlight, either glass tinting is used or lamination with a film (tinted or mirrored). Both options provide effective absorption in the visible spectrum.

The disadvantage of this solution is directly related to its advantages: both tinted and film-coated glass transmits very little sunlight (shading up to 40 - 45%), so on a cloudy autumn day you will have to turn on the lighting much earlier.

Multifunctional Multifunctional glass, in fact, is an advanced energy-saving glass: a multilayer coating based on silver oxides allows not only to retain heat in the room, but also to prevent the penetration of infrared rays from the outside. In summer, this allows you to save on air conditioning, and in winter – on heating.

The disadvantages of multifunctional glasses include significant (up to 25-30%) shading. Well, their price is much higher than that of standard options.

Shockproof Protection of the outer glass from damage and the premises from unauthorized entry can be achieved by installing special glass:
  • hardened (heat-strengthened) – withstands blows well, and if it breaks, it does not form large fragments that can lead to injury;
  • armored - covered with a special film that can withstand strong impacts. When you try to break the glass, the fragments remain on the film, reducing the risk of injury;
  • triplex - a structure of two glasses connected using a nitrocellulose composition (film or liquid). It is very difficult to break; with strong impact it does not break, but becomes covered with a fine network of cracks. Cons: heavy weight, high cost.

Well, and finally – filling the glass unit chambers. There are two options here:

  1. By default, the space between the glasses is filled with dried air. This option is the cheapest, but in terms of thermal insulation it is not the best.
  2. For the most effective heat conservation, an inert gas - argon or krypton - is pumped into the chamber. These gases have reduced thermal conductivity; in addition, the absence of oxygen has a positive effect on the service life of the energy-saving coating.

To fill the glass unit with inert gas, special valves in the spacer frame are used. Over time, these valves begin to “poison”, so argon losses range from 5 to 10% per year.

Part 3. Accessories

Locking mechanism device

The next element included in the window design is the fittings. As I noted above, a fittings complex is a mechanism thanks to which a window can be closed, opened, installed for ventilation, etc. Thanks to the presence of fittings, there is no need to install an additional lock on plastic windows (hook, latch, etc.) - the sash can only be opened by turning the handle from the inside.

The standard set of accessories consists of the following elements:

  1. The sash trim is the main part of the mechanism, consisting of hinge elements, locking cylinders (trunnions) and drive strips. The harness is attached to the sash and driven by a handle that is installed in a special hole.
  2. Hinges - attached to the frame, connected to the loop parts of the harness. They can function in both swivel, tilt and tilt and turn modes.
  3. Strikers - mounted on the frame profile from the inside of the sash, they ensure the engagement of the trunnions when installing the window in the closed position.

The standard fittings include cylindrical trunnions and one-sided strikers. They have one drawback: when subjected to force, the hooks can be separated by breaking the window from the outside. That is why for the first and last floors, as well as for private houses, it is worth installing anti-burglary fittings with mushroom-shaped pins and double-sided strikers.

The advantages of this solution include ease of control and versatility: we perform all actions by turning the handle. But high functionality also has a downside: if the mechanism of a plastic window is broken, you will have to call a specialist, because it is quite difficult to repair it yourself.

It should be noted that such a fittings complex is typical for standard windows. Sliding structures usually move not on hinges, but on guide profiles (slider), while on one side the movement of the sash is limited by a stopper. The disadvantage of this solution is the low tightness, and also the fact that to fix the sash in the closed position, you need to install special elements - latches, bolts, etc.

Ventilation

In addition to opening and closing the door, one of the tasks of the fittings complex is to provide space. Ventilators for plastic windows can have different configurations and, accordingly, different functionality:

Ventilation type Peculiarities
Microslit A small element that allows you to open the window literally 1-2 mm when you turn the handle 450. This type of ventilation is very convenient in winter, since the intensity of fresh air is low.
Seasonal A two-position switch that allows you to adjust the opening width of the sash in the “tilt” position: in summer - maximum, in winter - about half as much. Convenient because it can be adjusted once a season.
Stepped It is either a small piece of hardware with toothed hooks, or a plastic comb that is placed outside the window. Allows you to select the opening width of the sash from five to six positions.

Additional fittings

In addition to the basic set of parts, the fittings complex may also include additional elements. They are designed to expand the functionality of the window, as well as to facilitate basic operations. Such details include:

  1. Microlift is a small lever or roller that lifts the sash. The need to install a microlift is due to the fact that heavy sashes with significant widths sometimes sag under their own weight. And they partially warp on the hinges. As a result, the structure does not fit into the frame, touching its edge, and the sash has to be lifted. Naturally, it is better when it is not you who does this, but a separate element.

  1. Erroneous opening blocker – prevents the door from being opened simultaneously in the folding and rotating positions. Thus, we insure ourselves against a situation where a loosely closed sash falls out, hanging on one hinge.
  2. Rotation limiter/locker – when the sash is opened in a rotary position, it prevents it from swinging open and slamming shut under the influence of wind. As a result, both the glass unit and the slopes remain intact. In addition, the rotation lock allows you to install the sash at almost any angle, so for intensive ventilation you do not have to place a book in the corner of the window.
  3. Child lock - either built into the handle or mounted as a separate part at the bottom of the window. Allows you to install the structure for ventilation, but at the same time does not allow you to open the sash in a rotary position. Thus, the situation when a child can climb onto the windowsill, open the window and fall out of it, leaning on the mosquito net, is completely eliminated (naturally, if you remember to hide the key).

Part 4. Mounting details

Instructions for installing a PVC window in an opening may vary, so here I will describe only those parts that are used most often:

  1. Base (stand) profile - attached to the bottom of the frame, used as a support, and also as a place for attaching the window sill and ebb. Made from unpainted PVC, usually has a height of no more than 30 - 35 mm.

  1. A window sill is an internal horizontal panel that overlaps the mounting seam at the top. The simplest and cheapest window sills are made from hollow PVC panels, the most expensive are made from cast artificial stone. To prevent the glass from fogging up, special grilles are cut into the wide window sill boards that completely cover the radiator.
  2. Flashing is a plastic or metal panel that is installed at the bottom of the window from the outside. Attached to the stand profile or to the bottom of the frame, it prevents rain and melt water from flowing into the installation seam.

It is worth laying a layer of foam rubber or polyurethane foam under the drip strip - this way it will not rattle during gusts of wind.

  1. Sloping strips are panels that mask the edges of the window opening and cover the mounting seam from the top and sides. In addition to PVC panels, slopes can also be finished using plaster, plasterboard and other materials.
  2. Expansion profiles are PVC panels that are used to increase the dimensions of the structure and bridge the gaps between the frame and the window opening.
  3. Connecting profiles – used. As you might guess, for connecting several products. They can have a wide variety of designs, ranging from the simplest plastic panels with latches to a reinforced profile for a reinforced connection.

Additional equipment

As a matter of fact, what I describe in this section does not apply to the window itself. However, all these small details are very useful, and therefore their existence is also worth remembering. The minimum set, from my point of view, includes the following positions:

  1. Mosquito net is a net on an aluminum or plastic profile that is fixed outside the window. To attach the mesh, loops, plastic pockets, hooks, plungers and other devices of varying degrees of reliability and convenience are used.

Varieties of mosquito nets are anti-dust and anti-cat products. The first are designed to protect against plant pollen, the second - from pets falling out of the window. They differ primarily in the structure of the canvas and fastening to the frame.

  1. Supply ventilation valve. Built into the upper part of the window, it provides fresh air in automatic or semi-automatic mode. For the valve to function effectively, the exhaust must be working in the room, i.e. air must be removed through ventilation ducts - otherwise the inflow will be clearly insufficient.
  2. Blinds and roller blinds. They are used to adjust the light, installed either on the top of the frame, or (if you have so-called mini-cassettes) directly on the sash. In the second case, the presence of a curtain does not interfere with opening the window in a rotating or tilting position.

Conclusion

Of course, it is impossible to take into account all the nuances in one article, but at least you can familiarize yourself with basic things, such as window design, locking mechanism, range of additional products, etc.

For a more detailed study of all untouched aspects, I advise you to carefully read other materials in this section, watch the video in this article, and also do not hesitate to ask all your questions here in the comments and on the project forum.

Let's consider what types of fittings for plastic windows are provided to us by the supplier of window systems:

  1. A system that limits the rotation of a window is used to lock the window open and in a specific position.
  2. The latch helps the sash hold the window during strong winds or drafts and not break.
  3. Decorative overlays. They are installed on the front parts of the fittings, forming a unique design. But there is a catch - if the supplier offers a large number of them, therefore the product is not of high quality.
  4. A part to lift a sash that is sagging. Reduces the weight of this sash and the pressure on the hinges when it is closed.
  5. Folding scissor mechanism. When the window is open, it helps to turn it or open it slightly for ventilation;
  6. Children's castle. A kind of limiter for children. Fixes the window in a certain state and prevents it from opening completely;
  7. Locking mechanism when opening the window. Prevents the window from opening more than necessary;

High-quality and durable operation of a window system depends half on proven window fittings.

When choosing and purchasing PVC windows, the modern consumer first of all pays attention to functional features and performance qualities - this is the level of heat and sound insulation, appearance. But the buyer is least interested in the quality of fittings for plastic windows, and, as practice suggests, this is in vain.

Professionals involved in plastic window systems are confident that 50% of how a window will work depends entirely on the fittings. It is the fittings that determine whether the window structure will be sealed, reliable and burglar-proof. It is known that components account for about 15% of the price of the entire window, which means you need to know what the best fittings for plastic windows are, how to choose a reliable manufacturer and how not to buy what the manager is trying so hard to sell.

What is meant by fittings for PVC window systems?

Window fittings are a set of components that support the frame and make it possible to open or close the window. Also, with the help of fittings, a tighter fit of the frame to the profile is ensured.

In general, fittings include various handles, sealing elements, locks, latches and much more. People who are far from everything related to window solutions also include ventilation parts, mosquito nets, and sometimes window sills as accessories. Naturally, these parts are not accessories. However, when purchasing windows, you also need to pay attention to them.

Types of fittings for plastic windows

Depending on how the window sashes open, there are several types of fittings. Thus, we can distinguish rotary systems, as well as tilt-and-turn systems - such solutions are most often used in conjunction with windows and balcony doors, which can be opened using the usual swing method or by tilting. There are also parallel-sliding fittings - they are used only on sliding window-door structures.

Some are sure that there are separate window fittings for windows made of wood, plastic or aluminum. In fact, this is not true and dividing the components in this way is not entirely correct.

PVC window handles

There are many options for these parts. They vary in colors and materials. However, first of all, these components are divided among themselves according to functionality.

A standard window handle is the most common and affordable part. These components do not contain any additional features. With this handle you can open the window frame only using the swing or tilt-and-turn method.

These simplest components for plastic windows consist of a screw, which is attached to a plastic frame through a decorative overlay, under which the fastening elements - self-tapping screws - are hidden, as well as a handle.

These parts can be made from various materials and colors. The most affordable are plastic handles. Then there are aluminum ones. The most expensive products that are offered with luxury windows are made of brass, copper or wood.

There are also special anti-burglary handles. In appearance, they are no different from ordinary ones, but structurally they are made in such a way that they do not allow attackers to open the window from the street side. Using a special mechanism, any hacking attempts are blocked.

Removable handles are purchased in cases where there are small children in the family. There are many known cases of children falling out of windows. These components for plastic windows will help avoid these tragic situations. These solutions are also relevant if the window will not be opened very often. This part has a simple design. First, a special socket is fixed, and a handle is already inserted into it. The socket is permanently located on the frame, but the handle should only be used when you need to open the window.

Window handles with a lock are also a relevant solution for families with children. In order to open the frame completely, you first need to remove the handle lock - for this there is a lock on the body. To tilt the sash, you do not need a key - here the handle simply turns and then you need to pull it a little, as in any window.

Handles with burglar-proof buttons are also anti-burglary fittings for plastic windows. To open a window equipped with such a system, you must first press the button. These solutions seem convenient because there is no key to lose. But on the other hand, this is unsafe - a child can easily press a button that is interesting to him.

The curved handle is perfect for those windows that will only open outward. It differs from the ordinary one only in a higher level of comfort. When opening the window, the edge of the handle will not touch

There is also a balcony hook - this part is installed on the door block from the balcony side, and an ordinary handle is installed inside.

Window seals

These parts are also fittings and they perform very important functions in the design. It depends on them whether the window will close hermetically and whether the room will be warm. These products differ in materials.

Foam seals are used only with wooden windows. The foam itself is very fragile and also perfectly absorbs moisture. That is why, in our climate, such a seal will last less than a year. These materials are produced in varying thicknesses - from 2-3 mm to several centimeters.

Polyethylene seals, like foam seals, are used primarily with wooden windows. They are made in the form of self-adhesive products or without an adhesive layer. These seals are slightly better than foam rubber ones - they do not absorb moisture and also retain their shape much better. Such products will last much longer.

Brush sealing products are a special base that is mounted on a profile and also made from a brush. Most often, most manufacturers use fabric materials as a base. To make the fabric tough and durable, it is covered with a polypropylene layer. The brush is lint. In order to increase moisture resistance, they are coated with silicone. Such parts vary in color - black, white, gray and other colors are widely available.

PVC seals are made of plastic. The quality of this product is very low. In summer, the material becomes soft. In winter, on the contrary, it becomes very fragile. These products do not differ in service life.

The most popular This will be confirmed by managers; just visit any hardware store for plastic windows and doors. Among the advantages of rubber-based products are high strength and heat resistance. In addition, rubber seals are very elastic and flexible - due to this, any deformation is completely eliminated.

There are several types of rubber seals. Products made from silicone are the best in their class. They are made of environmentally friendly material and are not afraid of moisture or exposure to aggressive environments. Available in white or grey. Thermoplastic elastomer products are significantly inferior to silicone ones. Products made from ethylene propylene have a long service life.

Window hinges

These fittings vary according to the type of installation. All types of hinges are applicable for all types of window structures.

So, an overhead or standard hinge is suitable for both wooden, metal and PVC windows. The product consists of two metal cards. There are detachable and one-piece hinges, rotating or rotating with the possibility of tilting the design for a plastic window. Often, after installation, the loop is covered with a decorative trim.

Screwed directly to the frame with special threaded pins. In this case, one loop can have up to 6 pins. The more there are, the more reliable the design will be. Previously, such screw-in hinges were used exclusively with wooden window structures. Today they are also made for PVC window products.

Used for structures of any type. But hinges for wooden and plastic windows are radically different. Among the advantages of these products is not only their hidden installation. These solutions have a long service life and allow you to open the frame to a larger angle. In addition, these hinges make it difficult for an attacker to gain access to the room through a window. And one more advantage - no draft penetrates into these loops.

The anti-burglary loop is 100% secure. The set includes special anti-burglary plates that prevent entry if the window is closed.

Locks are most often supplied complete with a handle. There are single-point and multi-point locks. According to the closing method, a multi-point lock can be bolted or without a bolt.

This is a slight constipation that looks like a fungus. This is one part of the locking mechanism. Under the action of the locking mechanism, the trunnions can rotate and catch other parts. They contribute to a tighter closure of the sash.

Plank

Those who have never dealt with plastic windows professionally do not know what kind of fittings there are for plastic windows other than standard well-known elements. But there are many more different parts in the kit.

The bar allows the sash to fit more tightly to the profile. Often the bar can also provide additional security against burglary. Most manufacturers often use only two strips per window, however, the more of these parts, the better.

For those who do not know what the best fittings for plastic windows are, there are counters that are responsible for burglary protection, as well as tilt-and-turn ones. In addition to its main tasks, the bar is also the fulcrum for the swing-out sash.

Corner switches

These elements drive the locking mechanism of the window system through the corner. Structurally, it is a set of plates made of elastic steel grades that all work together. These parts can also be burglar-resistant.

Scissors

These elements are used for tilt-and-turn structures. They are designed to fix the sash in the open position. In addition, scissors make the locking mechanism easier to operate.

Constipation

These components of window fittings are designed to open, close, and tilt the window sash. The mechanism is activated by rotating the handle, which moves a special lever. Already from this lever the entire locking system is activated. There are basic constipation, as well as additional and secondary constipation.

Middle locks can be found at the bottom of the window profile and at the side on the side where the hinges are located. Its main function is to press the frame against the profile. The part can be connected to tilt-and-turn locks, scissors and other mechanisms.

Additional locks are called locks, and the main locks come in various designs. Thus, a distinction is made between tilt-and-turn constipations, rotary or pin-type.
