Do-it-yourself construction and repairs

Homemade hook for winter fishing with your own hands. If you took it, you pulled it, but if it fell off, don’t ask what the fishing hook is for. Choosing a hook for winter fishing - design options

Not every fisherman and does not always take it with him. During summer fishing, and even from the shore, it is unlikely to be needed even by those who are waiting for a bite from a large fish. A landing net is more appropriate here. A spinner will definitely need it in a boat. But here, too, it’s more dexterous to work with a good landing net. It is not so easy to successfully hit a suitable point with a curved tip on a pike wriggling in the water. Yes, the boat may get damaged.
The hook is simply irreplaceable for ice fishing. Even fishermen who are ready for this tell how a large bream brought to the hole does not pass through it. Then they hook it with a hook and widen the hole. No one could hold the giant on the line. This also happens to those who carry perches and ruffs without hoping for large fish.

Pike “drives away” any other fish, so even very large ones can be dragged into a standard hole. But the pike, even in winter, when it does not have the same energy as in summer, begins to resist strongly when it sees a real danger - again, without a hook, you risk breaking the fishing line. But when in winter you hook a rather large carp, you will regret its absence for many years.

In winter, the ice very quickly gains its maximum thickness - half a meter or more. To use the hook, it must be even longer - a folding structure is indispensable. Telescopic is the most convenient. It is bought or made, for example, using a camera tripod or other telescopic rod. You can make the hook collapsible or foldable - according to the principle of an ice drill.

There is also a hook, which, after releasing the clamp of the bracket that tensions the cable, becomes flexible and fits into a backpack without any problems. It is made on the principle of car antennas. The cable passes through the longitudinal hole of metal couplings, shaped like a spool of thread. When the cable is tensioned, the structure acquires sufficient rigidity.

There is no point in saying that the hook of the hook must be well sharpened. A comfortable handle increases the chance of not losing your enviable prey. Experienced fishermen always do this
asymmetrical, so that, without looking at the hook, you can feel the direction of the tip with your hand - this is especially good for operating in a hole where almost nothing is visible. Therefore, the hook shown in the figure is not only easy to manufacture, but also easy to use. It uses steel spring wire with a diameter of about 5 millimeters.

There are folding hooks combined with a scoop for cleaning the hole from ice crumbs. Convenient: fewer objects on the ice while fishing. But there is also a drawback: an inattentive person risks tearing his clothes with the tip, or even getting scratched.

Bagorik for winter fishing with your own hands

Fishing is an unpredictable process, depending on what size fish will bite. You might like a small fish, weighing 100 grams, or a large specimen, the weight is occupied) sometimes it reaches 10 kg, but saving is not easy. Catching a small fish does not come with any surprises, but catching a large specimen is fraught with uncertainty in its own capabilities. This is especially important when the fisherman did not personally take a special device. It is difficult to drag a large fish even to the shore, but taking it out onto the shore is a whole problem. You, in the summer, fishermen use landing nets, but in the winter, you can’t pull out fish unless you use a hook. Therefore, hooks are divided into summer and winter ones. Summer hooks reach a length of 1.5 meters, but winter hooks are either short or long.

Why a hook for fishing

) the myth of a fishing attribute is always found among lovers of winter fishing, and especially among those who practice catching predators. Without a hook, it’s not a good idea to go fishing at all. It is true that removing a large fish from a hole is quite problematic, especially with bare hands, and even in the freshest air.

Without this usual device, it is difficult in winter to cope with such predators as pike, pike perch, burbot, etc. The hook will not be needed when fishing for large perch, carp, bream, etc. The mechanism of hooking is the following: when the fish is already in the hole, it is caught with a hook by the lower jaw, or, in other words, by the gills.

And the most important thing is that the hook is strong and does not let the fisherman down at the most crucial moment, moreover, gaff should not take up much space and should not fit freely in a fishing box. Here, the hook is made collapsible, which is not feasible more conveniently.

Hook device

The general design of the hook contains different implementations, no matter how annoying it may sound, the principle of its operation is actually monotonous, which indicates the presence of a standard part. No matter what design the hook consists of 2 main parts: the handle and the working part. The main material for the production of handles is wood of such species as birch, ash, beech, maple, beech and others.

  • The design of the handle is of no small importance, as is the quality of its production. How oil can be painstakingly sanded and not covered with a water-repellent varnish or, in other words, paint. The coating will not use a primer, which is rougher than enamel. The color of the coating is, naturally, black, so that the hook is easy to find in the snow. However, it is not recommended to use metal to produce pens. In the freshest air, and additionally with water, your hands will instantly freeze to the instrument, even if they are wearing gloves.
  • The working part of the hook is an iron hook made of metal wire, about 5 mm wide. A large one is suitable for making a hook fishing hook for soma.

How to make a hook for ice fishing with your own hands

Most of the individual fishermen practice independent production of fishing accessories, gear, bait, etc. Making hookah is also possible at home. It is not only simple, but also interesting, although you can simply buy it at the store. At the same time, it may happen that he will not be able to satisfy his buyer. Concerning self-made, then the result will be such a device as is necessary.

To make such a product you will need the following tools and materials:

  • A piece of wood for making a cylindrical handle, 25 mm in diameter and 200-300 mm long.
  • Line segment steel wire up to 1 meter long and up to 5 mm thick.
  • Car clamps.
  • A couple of washers.
  • Large catfish hook.
  • Welding machine.
  • Bulgarian.
  • Electric drill.
  • Primer for wood in a dark shade.

The manufacture of the device begins with the handle. The manufactured handle is attached to working part two ways:

  • A through hole with a diameter of about 5 mm is drilled inside the wooden blank, along its body. A washer is placed on one edge of the steel wire and welded. After this, a wooden blank is placed on the wire, followed by a washer, which is also attached to the wire by welding. In conclusion, you should use a grinder to cultivate the welding areas. That's it, the handle is securely fastened.
  • The second method is even simpler than the first. One end of the steel wire is bent at an angle of 90 degrees. In a wooden blank, across its body and at a distance of 5 cm from the edge, a hole with a diameter of 5 mm is drilled. The wire is applied to the handle so that the bent end of the wire fits into the drilled hole. After this, the wire is pressed with two clamps and that’s it, the handle is securely fastened. All that remains is to cover it together with the wire with a primer.

Do-it-yourself telescopic fishing hook

I decided to make it, high-quality, convenient, in half an hour. gaff, look what happened. Who wants pomo.

How to make a gaff with your own hands.

Hook For DIY fishing, from wire and wine corks. link in VK.

The second method, although simpler, is not very attractive from an ergonomic point of view. In addition, the presence of metal on the handle, along with clamps, is not an optimal solution.

After the handle is securely fastened, you can begin to form the working part, which can be done in two ways. For example:

First option

The wire can simply be bent. To do this, you should measure the size of the hook. The optimal length of this device can be in the range of 0.7-1 meter. Having measured desired length, the wire is bent with a radius of about 15 mm. The length of the bent part can be 70-80 mm, and the rest is cut off with a grinder. Using the same grinder, the curved end is sharpened so that it is sharp.

Second option

This method of manufacturing the working part involves the use welding machine. The point of production is that a large catfish hook is welded to the end of the wire. To do this, measure out the required piece of wire and cut off the excess with a grinder. A hook is attached to the end of this wire by welding.

To ensure that the hook takes up little space, it can be made of two parts. To do this, use the same grinder to cut the device in half, and cut threads at the cut points. After this, the ends are connected using a coupling with an internal thread, up to 50 mm long.

Types of hooks for fishing

It would seem that the hook is a fairly simple device, and what other options might there be. In fact, there are several designs, and they are different. In addition to the fact that they come in both summer and winter, they also come in folding and non-folding types.

Folding hook

This type of gaff is ideal for winter fishing, since when assembled it takes up minimal space. It consists mainly of 2 parts, although any number of parts can be formed using this principle. The connecting elements are hinges, which allow you to move the gaff from the transport position to the working position.

Flexible hook

The design of such a device is different in that inside all the components there is a hole through which a cable passes, 3 mm thick. There is a tension device on the handle with which the cable is tensioned. As a result of tension, all components are pressed tightly against each other. This gaff is not cheap. Made from thin stainless metal.

This version of the hook has one significant advantage: you can adjust its length, depending on the fishing conditions. Similar designs are produced more for summer fishing. This is understandable, since the presence of water and frost can negate all its advantages.

How to use a hook correctly?

It is unlikely that anyone would think that this tool also needs to be used correctly. This is especially true for those moments when you already need to hook a large fish. At such moments, the fisherman forgets about everything, as well as about what needs to be done at this moment. And yet, there are some rules that will allow this operation to be carried out without losing fish. Here they are:

  • At these moments you should not fuss, making sharp and ambiguous movements. Composure and calmness are the guarantee of successful fishing.
  • The hook should be lowered into the hole until the fish appears there.
  • The fish should be hooked in the area of the front fins.
  • The angler's movements must be deliberate and quick.

If the fish does not fit into the hole, then the hole should be widened, holding the fish with a hook.

Pocket safety hook

Real fishermen are, first of all, real masters who are constantly improving fishing equipment, making them more practical. Bagorik did not go unnoticed by fans of fantasy and this is what came out of it.

To make such a device you will need:

  • Telescopic antenna from an old radio.
  • A couple of wine corks (maybe more).
  • Hook for catfish (large).
  • Some copper wire.

First you need to take a few wine corks. A hole is made through the entire body of the plug, with a diameter slightly less than the thickness of the first leg of the telescopic antenna. As a result, when all the plugs are put on the knee, you should get a light and comfortable handle.

Then take the hook and solder it to the end of the last bend. Whether to bite off the eye of the hook is a decision made by the manufacturer of the device. For reliability, it is better to wrap the soldering area with copper wire, which must be stripped of insulation. In this case, the eye of the hook can also be useful, which will contribute to a more secure fastening. That's all, the hook is ready for use.

Conclusion

Making such a simple but very useful device is not that difficult, and sometimes even very simple. This requires a minimum of details and a minimum of time. If you use your imagination, you can actually make a hook from the simplest parts that can always be found in the garage or shed (or even on the balcony) of any avid (experienced) fisherman.

When using a hook, one serious point should be taken into account: if it is used carelessly, serious injuries can occur. This is due to the fact that the tip of the hook, and even more so when it is made of a hook, is quite sharp. In order to avoid injury, especially during its transportation, it is advisable to put a cambric of the appropriate length or a piece of insulation from the wire on the tip. IN as a last resort, you can put the same wine cork on the tip.

Nothing brings such disappointment when fishing as a large specimen that falls off. In order to increase the fisherman’s chances of lifting a large trophy from the water use a landing net or hook. In this article, I decided to talk about the gaff and the benefits of using it and also shared homemade design gaff.

What is a gaff?

Hook- this is a special device for lifting fish either aboard a boat or onto ice (when fishing from the shore it is better to use a landing net). In the case where when fishing from a boat you can do without it (although if the specimen does not fit into the landing net, it will be a shame), then when fishing over ice you cannot do without a hook.

I'm on 100% I'm sure some will say it's useless. I’ll say - “Have you ever found yourself in such situations when, without a hook, the fish simply leaves your hands, and it’s too late to bite your elbows - you won’t get the fish back.”

I hope that after a little reflection, you will agree with me that the gaff is not a detachable tool for an ice fisherman (this does not apply to “sprat” lovers)

In what situations should it be used? How to use it?

Use a gaff when lifting aboard a boat that is not included in the landing net. And in winter, when biting a large fish and fishing it correctly, when the fish is already at the very hole and simply does not crawl out.

In such a situation, a hook is needed, with which the fisherman catches the fish so that it does not fall off and asks his colleagues for help, or he himself widens the hole in order to pull out the long-awaited trophy.

Nowadays, store shelves are bursting with a variety of hooks. There are collapsible, telescopic, flexible. They also differ greatly in price, it varies from 8 to 500 UAH.(what I saw).

DIY fishing hook

Let's forget for a moment about everything ready-made in the store and remember that we have hands!

Going into my garage and looking around a little, I decided what I would make the gaff out of. Now I offer this design for your consideration, although it could be simpler...

To make the hook I needed:

  • Old metal antenna (telescopic)
  • Wooden handle;
  • Steel spring wire (we call it steel wire).
  • Epoxy adhesive.

I think there is no point in explaining how I made it, everything can be seen from the photo. Although if you have any questions, ask in the comments to the article. Always happy to answer.

Good fishing and good trophies to you.

The fishing process is akin to playing roulette, when you are lucky enough to catch a couple of palm-sized crucian carp, and when you are lucky enough to catch a five-kilogram pike perch, and at such moments you need to have a device on hand that makes it possible to pull this miracle out of the water. In the summer this can be done either manually or with the help of a landing net; they rarely resort to hooks, but in winter it is possible to get fish out of an ice hole only by hooking it with a hook. Not everyone lives in a locality that has a specialized fishing store. In addition, some simply think that this is not an accessory worth spending money on. Therefore, many people have to make the gaffs themselves. In this article we will focus on how to make a hook for winter fishing with your own hands.

Hook for fisherman winter time is an indispensable accessory. Imagine a situation where you are pulling a fish to the surface of the water, but you cannot get it out of the hole. Firstly, you are wearing gloves, and the water is icy, if you climb into the cold water with your bare hands every time, you simply won’t last long. Secondly, the ice around you is wet, the water in the ice hole may be low and you will have to kneel, which is also very problematic. There are third and fourth ones, but we think the first two reasons are enough to simply use a hook to hook a fish dragged to the hole by the lower jaw from the back or even by one of the gills and easily pull it out of the water. And do not forget that it is possible to pull carp or silver carp out of an ice hole with your hands, but in the case of predators such as pike, burbot or pike perch, you simply cannot do without a hook.

Hook device for winter fishing

Hooks may vary in appearance, but the integral parts of each should be:

  • Working part. It is most often made of steel wire, bent at the end in the form of a hook, or is simply a large fish hook profiled for catfish.
  • Lever. The most reliable handle will be one made from hard wood. It must be carefully sanded and it is best if water-repellent paint is applied to it.
  • Float (rarely used). Very often the hook slips out of your hands and goes under the water. Therefore, to the handle, at the end farthest from the hook, you should attach a float on a small (10-15 centimeters) rope, so that the hook that slips out of your hands can be grabbed at the last moment by this rope with the float, or, even if it slips out, so that it does not went to the bottom.

How to make your own hook for winter fishing?

There are many options, but they all ultimately come down to one scheme, which we will consider in detail later.

The hooks sold in stores are, of course, also good, but an accessory made with one’s own hands will instill greater reliability and will be made, as they say, “to suit oneself,” and therefore will be one hundred percent convenient and will suit its owner in everything. So, the materials required to make the hook:

  • birch or oak blank for the handle, having a length of up to 30 and a width of 2.5 cm;
  • steel pin or wire, 5 mm in diameter and no more than a meter long;
  • durable clamps (for example, for a car);
  • washers 2 pcs.;
  • large hook for catfish;
  • dark primer;
  • welding machine;
  • electric drill.

Attach the handle

Method 1 (using a welding machine). A hole no larger than a steel rod or wire prepared for the hook is drilled from the inside along the tree. A washer is placed on one of the edges of the wire and welded. Then the rod is threaded into the handle up to the washer, then a second washer is put on the rod and welded to the rod from the back side of the future accessory, and thus the handle sandwiched between two washers is ready.

Method 2 (without the help of a welding machine). Bend the wire one centimeter long at one end to create a perpendicular angle. In a wooden workpiece, 5 cm from the edge, drill a hole along the width of the wire, press the wire against the workpiece so that the bent end goes into the drilled hole. Then the wire is pressed against the workpiece with clamps and that’s it, the handle is ready for use.

The hook is a necessary accessory when fishing with a spinning rod. Since the spinner is constantly on the move when fishing, it is advisable that his hands are not occupied with anything other than the tackle he is fishing with.

With this in mind, I set out to design a portable, collapsible boat hook that wouldn't be too restrictive, but would always be handy. Contrary to expectations, I managed to do this quite quickly. I've had this hook for over six years now, and there has never been a time when it let me down.

The bagorik is portable (it easily fits into a backpack); when fishing, it hangs on my waist belt, without restricting my movements, and if necessary, it can easily be put into “combat” readiness with one hand, which is especially important for a spinning fisherman.

The design of the hook is so simple that anyone who knows how to handle the simplest plumbing tools can make it.

As can be seen from the picture, the hook is folding, telescopic type. For its manufacture, the following materials are required: 1) a duralumin tube 320 mm long, with an internal diameter of 12-13 mm 7; 2) a duralumin tube also 320 mm long with an outer diameter of 10-11 mm and an inner diameter of 7-8 mm 2; 3) a piece of wire made of silver steel or other steel wire with a length of about 450 mm and a diameter of 5 mm3; 4) various small parts, such as scraps of brass, copper wire, etc. Instead of duralumin tubes, you can also install brass tubes, but in this case the hook will be much heavier. Making a hook is not difficult - this can be understood from the given drawings.

All connections and fastenings of the hook are made using bushings (Fig. 1 and 3 - parts 10 a, 10 6, 10 b and 10 d), made from scraps of sheet brass, previously cold-worked to give it greater elasticity. The bushings must be carefully rolled up, leaving the seam unsoldered. This is necessary so that the bushings are springy and prevent spontaneous extension of the hook when carrying it. The bushings 10a and 106 are identical in all their dimensions, as is the other pair of tubes 10b and 10g, differing from the first only in their diameter.

Particular attention should be paid to the careful manufacturing and fit of the paired bushings to each other and to the tubes, since the trouble-free operation of the hook will depend on this. The bushings must be adjusted so that the parts of the hook fit tightly into one another. In addition, in the extended position of the hook, the bushings should tightly lock the entire hook system.

The bushings and rod are attached to the tubes using rivets 11 made of copper wire with a diameter of 1.5-2 mm.

The easiest way to make bushings is by rolling them on a rod of suitable diameter. After manufacturing, they are processed with a file according to the shape shown in Fig. 3. As mentioned above, the bushings should be springy.

Bushings 10 b and 10 g are deepened into the tubes by 2-3 mm so that after assembly the ends of the tubes can be rolled, this will create greater strength, as well as a more finished appearance of the hook.
If the above work is carried out accurately and accurately, then good job hookah will be provided.

The handle of the hook (Fig. 4) is made of wood, and for strength and convenience it is wrapped with twine 5 and coated with oil varnish. It would be nice if you could make (stamp from thin brass) a head in the form of a hemisphere onto the end of the handle. The ring on the handle for hanging the hook is made from a piece of wire with a diameter of about 3 mm. It is attached to the hook using a sleeve 8 rolled in a thick tube and a washer 9 by riveting the ring rod.

Making a fuse (it is necessary for safely wearing a hook on a belt) is clear from Fig. 2; parts 12 and 13 are made of brass with a thickness of 1 -1.5 mm.

When fishing, it is convenient to hang the hook from the waist belt using a special device (clutch) shown in Fig. 5. This device allows for very easy and convenient removal of the hook from the belt with one hand.

The coupling is made from a piece of thin-walled brass or duralumin tube by flattening it to fit the thickness of the waist belt. On the sides of the coupling, holes are drilled for the belt and spring, which is mounted on the hook handle.

This spring can also serve as a good gapper when releasing the spoon from the mouth of a fish. It is made from steel wire or a bicycle spoke. During fishing, the hook is suspended from the waist belt on the left side. Releasing it and bringing it into “combat” readiness is done with the right hand (the left holds the rod) in one of the following ways:

1) without removing the hook from the belt, you need to move it apart, take the rod near the bend with your right hand and pull it to the right side of you. In this case, you should slightly rotate it in one direction or the other so that the bushings securely lock the hook in the working position. This method can only be used if the hook is well adjusted;

2) by compressing the spring with the fingers of your right hand, remove the hook from the belt. We insert the toe of the boot into the hook of the rod and stretch the boot using the handle. By lightly rotating in one direction or the other, we make sure that the hook is locked, therefore, it can be put into action.

The exact dimensions of the parts are not given here, since their dimensions will depend on the size of the tubes and their diameter. The only important thing is that the two tubes do not differ too much in diameter and that they can be connected using thin bushings. The same applies to the rod. The given length of the tubes was chosen so that the hook, when folded, fits at the bottom of the backpack.
