- The height of the pillars supporting the canopy is set at such a level that the rafters can be mounted with a slight slope. To give rigidity to the supporting frame, the wall beam is connected by a transverse beam to the tops of the racks - that is, the top frame is made.
- Well, then it’s a matter of technique: lay rafters on the frame, at a distance of 50-60 cm, fill the sheathing over them, and install the roofing material. In order to provide the veranda with better insolation, its roof is often covered with polycarbonate, or, by analogy with attics, small windows are provided in it.
By the way, projects with an attic and a veranda also deserve attention - these structures and the methods of finishing them have a lot in common. But today we are talking specifically about verandas, and then we will offer small instructions on their construction.
Closed extension with good insolation
It is clear that on an open veranda or terrace, you can enjoy fresh air only in warm and windless weather. The opportunity to solve this problem and use the unheated extension year-round is provided by the construction of a closed veranda.

Even if there is no fireplace on the veranda, it is quite possible to use an infrared heater for heating, which can very quickly increase the temperature in the room. You can also install a warm floor, the base for which can equally well be a concrete screed or an insulated frame floor.
Brick and wood - classics of the genre
In the example below, we present a veranda with brick walls. In principle, it would be a stretch to call them walls, since here we see only narrow partitions separating the panoramic windows.
The large glazing area plays both an aesthetic and practical role: it improves the insolation of the room, and makes it possible to do without electricity on a cloudy day - if, for example, you want to read on the veranda.
- In this case, the glazing is framed. We see large floor-to-ceiling windows, which allow you to open, if necessary, or completely remove the transom and insert a mosquito net in its place. Frames can be made of wood, metal-plastic, or aluminum - it doesn’t matter. The main thing is that there is so much light in the veranda that it is comfortable not only for humans, but also for indoor plants.
- Now a little about brick walls. It is clear that they must rest on a solid foundation: a monolithic strip, a slab, as well as a concrete or metal grillage - it all depends on the design of the foundation. Judging by the fact that the floors on the verandas we gave as an example are tiled, we can assume that the base underneath is concrete: slab or monolithic.
- This type of foundation allows not only to support the brickwork, but also to provide a ceramic coating for the floor. The main walls of the veranda are erected by analogy with the walls of any other building. The masonry is carried out to a level that will provide a slope to the roof. Along the upper perimeter, the walls are tied with mauerlat beams, and the roof rafters are mounted on it.
- They are usually lined with clapboards from the inside, and the result is a smooth wooden ceiling in which you can lay insulation or install built-in lamps. But there is another solution. The roof sheathing can be done without a gap - contrary to what is usually done when covering a roof. When the slats are completely stuffed from the roof side, a ceiling lining is obtained, in which the rafter beams remain visible.
At the same time, the ceiling acquires an interesting ribbed relief. Together with brickwork, especially antique brickwork, and left without plastering, you can get an interior in the loft, Provence, or country style - and which one will depend on the interior decoration of the veranda.
All of the above can also be applied to the attic, because above it there is also a roof truss system, which can be used in various variations in the design of the room.
Facade glazing for veranda
Projects for verandas attached to a house often include full façade glazing, made without brick partitions - these are windows corresponding in size to the perimeter of the walls. This is a completely modern approach to the construction of verandas, which not only has high aesthetics, but is also valuable from a purely practical point of view, as it allows you to admire the opening landscape while relaxing.
- In the manufacture of facade systems, good old aluminum is most often used - a light, inexpensive and strong enough material for glazing that is practically resistant to corrosion. In this regard, neither wood nor plastic can compare with aluminum. A variety of systems are used in the glazing of the facades of large office buildings, and in principle, any of them can be used in the construction of an enclosed veranda.
- But these are facades, and here you can choose the simplest option, for example: mullion-transom. As in any frame structure, the basis of the system is vertical posts, which are rigidly tied together by horizontal elements - crossbars.
- In addition to the fact that such a veranda looks very nice, it is also quite warm and quiet, since the glazing is the same double-glazed windows that are installed in plastic windows today. The structure is assembled from aluminum profiles, which can be assembled in various variations.
- This makes it possible to implement various design solutions, make a blank wall, or build windows and doors into it. By the way, frameless glazing can also be used for the veranda; only in this case, you can only count on protection from wind and rain. There will not be much warmth in such a room in winter, and in this case it is not possible to put a mosquito net on the openings.
- As for frame systems, they can be used not only for glazing walls, but also roofs. They are much easier to install, and fewer problems are created during the operation of the structure. In any case, if you need to make repairs or partially replace some element, it will cost an order of magnitude cheaper.
- In addition, in frame structures, glass can be completely replaced with polycarbonate, which has higher thermal insulation characteristics. The entrance to the veranda is provided both from the house and from the street, and sometimes you can enter the house only by passing this room.
Instead of a traditional swing door, it could very well be a sliding wall. Moreover, the doors can move apart in different ways: like a sliding wardrobe or an accordion.
It can also be a wall, the glass doors of which are moved into the corner and folded in parallel, like book pages. Such designs allow you to realize almost any idea - you just need to develop a sketch in advance and prepare a high-quality foundation for their installation.
