Tip: if you don’t have contour paints or drawing with them seems difficult to you, then you can paint with the help of improvised means: a toothpick, a needle, a cotton swab or a thin brush.
Technique:
- First we need to come up with an idea and prepare a supporting sketch. You can find it on the Internet and print it in a suitable size or draw it yourself. You can also use a homemade or ready-made template or stencil.
- If you are confident in your sight drawing skills, you can skip this step. If you are a beginner, then it is better to transfer the desired picture onto the glass, that is, outline the main details and lines of the picture/pattern. To do this, you need to: draw or print a picture, cut it out (you can roughly), then tightly paint over its reverse side with a soft pencil, and then attach the picture with the shaded reverse side to the glass and trace all or only the main parts of the drawing with the same pencil. There should be barely noticeable but useful lines on the bottle. If the image is not too complex, then it is enough to outline the main details directly on the bottle.
- Now you need to degrease the glass and wait until it dries.
- If you wish, you can cover the entire bottle with colored acrylic paint and wait for it to dry completely.
- Let's start painting: we trace all the contours, from time to time cleaning the tube spout with a needle and, if necessary, correcting flaws with a cotton swab moistened with water. It is better to start drawing with large details.
- If you draw with a contour using the stained glass technique, then the contours should be closed, and the stained glass paint should be in contact with them. Also make sure that all parts are painted completely without overpainting, otherwise the coating will not last long. Filling the contours with stained glass paints is possible only after 2 hours, but you can speed up their drying with a hairdryer;
- In the technique of dot painting with a contour, the main thing is to maintain the same and minimum spacing in one line of the drawing and maintain the same diameter/volume of dots (in one line).
Tip: Practice drawing outlines or dots on paper first. Remember that you need to press the tube with equal force.
- When the drawing is ready, all you have to do is dry or wait for the paints to dry, following the manufacturer's recommendations. Most often, painted glass is baked in the oven at a temperature of 170 degrees for about 30 minutes or left to dry naturally for a day.

Drawings from children's coloring books translated onto thick paper look interesting. It is enough to choose a suitable pattern, attach it to the back of a glass bottle or plate, and use paints to begin the creative process.
What is needed for work
Complex interweaving patterns when painting glass bottles seem impossible at first glance, but a few tips on how to proper organization the work will make decorating easier. It is enough to prepare materials and several templates, and then learn how to apply dot patterns on a landscape sheet.
Ornaments of the radial type look advantageous. The pattern of a lace napkin is taken as a basis, repeating the same patterned motif along the rays from the center. Beginners are recommended to use ready-made stencils, while experienced craftsmen can get creative by creating their own intricate dotted patterns.
List of materials and tools for decoration:
- Any glassware. Not only souvenir items will be useful, but also ordinary bottles, glasses, and plates.
- They use thick acrylic paints that do not spread during work. Craftswomen prefer special acrylic contours in tubes, adapted for working with glass surfaces. Select several basic contours; to add beauty, it is recommended to use silver or golden paints.
- To degrease the surface, you need a little acetone, cologne or alcohol. Cotton wool soaked in the solution can easily remove fingerprints while applying patterns.
- Sometimes the glass is leveled with a primer before the work process. You can cover the surface with a layer of gouache or acrylic paint.
- To mark the boundaries of the pattern, use a simple pencil. To work with acrylic paints, a pointed wooden stick, felt-tip pen or brushes are suitable.
- Paper clips or tape for fixing stencils.
- You can't do without cotton swabs and disks.
- When drawing, the tips of contour tubes are periodically cleaned with thin needles, because thick paint often dries out inside.
After the paint has dried, the finished product is decorated at your discretion. It is recommended to combine bottle painting with decorations from polymer clay or decoupage.
Surface preparation
Before work, it is not enough just to select the colors of the basic contours and stencils. Care should be taken proper preparation bottles to dot painting, otherwise the efforts will not be crowned with success.
Operating principle:
- The bottle is dipped in a warm soapy solution to make it easier to remove the paper labels. If the paper does not come off, use a dish brush.
- The glass container is rinsed, left to dry, and wiped with a towel.
- After the bottles are completely dry, degreasing begins. Use a cotton pad soaked in acetone to thoroughly wipe the work surface.
- Fingerprints often remain during the drawing process, so it is recommended to keep a cotton swab with cologne or alcohol nearby.
- You can apply patterns directly to the bottle, but sometimes patterns on a dark or light background look more expressive. To do this, the glass is first coated with a single-color layer of acrylic paint in white, black or blue.
- The selected design is applied to the dried background with a pencil using a stencil or template. When it was not possible to immediately beautifully outline the outlines of the design, paint the bottle with the background again and try again.
Degreasing the surface of a bottle or other container is the key to applying beautiful dot painting.
To prevent trouble, you should apply a drop of paint to the unwanted glass to ensure the required consistency. If the paint seems liquid and spreads, just place the tube in the refrigerator for a while. A contour that is too thick leaves peaks stretched upward during the process; it is advisable to hold the tube in warm water for a little while.
To make the pattern even and symmetrical, a strip of notebook sheet is fixed to the outer walls of the bottle using tape.
Stages of drawing and painting of framing contours
After choosing a pattern, they begin painting the bottle with contours. Both stencil drawings and ready-made templates are suitable for the process, although the second option is preferable for beginners.
The stencil consists of slits with cut out patterns. It is enough to secure it to the surface with tape to paint with dots inside. The method is more suitable for applying paint with sponges, but is not often used for applying filigree ornaments.
It is recommended to use templates, that is, cut-out designs, along the contour of which dot patterns are drawn. After coating work surface the main background, you can use carbon paper to transfer the desired outline.
Tips for painting a bottle:
- The prepared degreased surface is marked before work. More often, thin lines are drawn with a pencil, trying only to outline the contours. They try not to touch the glass with their hands so as not to leave marks. If your hand constantly slips, it is enough to wrap the place of contact with the bottle with a napkin.
- To apply the drawing, try to thickly shade the sample, after which it is pressed tightly to the bottle with this side, securing it with masking tape. The translucent picture is outlined with a pencil, and an imprint of the ornament remains on the glass.
- In the absence of a drawing, the imagination of the craftswoman will help cope with the task. The main thing is to adhere to the principle of symmetry and repetition of pattern details through even areas. It is advisable to fasten a strip of paper along the diameter of the bottle in a box, which will help divide the surface into equal sectors.
- Several templates in the form of semicircles are cut out of paper, attached to a strip in the middle, after which you can begin to apply the design.
- The secret to applying dots evenly is to position the tube vertically to the surface. It is advisable for the craftswoman to regulate the pressure on the tube; pressing hard will lead to the appearance of more voluminous dots. When the tube is tilted, elongated blots will appear instead of even drops.
- Applying dots with a stick of acrylic paints is somewhat more difficult than using tubes with contours. In the latter version, even an inexperienced needlewoman will quickly learn to draw beautiful patterns.
- Excess paint on the tube spout is removed with dry wipes to avoid contamination of the surface. Also, always check the thickness of the new paint on a landscape sheet, making several dots.
- All flaws when applying the ornament are easy to remove. If there is a mistake with the color of the dot or you get a sloppy blot, you should quickly remove it with a cotton swab dipped in cologne or alcohol. A more complex option is when a drop appears among the finished pattern, and removing it risks smearing several dots. It is advisable to wait for the untidy blot to dry completely, then cut it off with a sharp blade, cleaning the surface from any remaining paint. A dot of the desired color is placed in the free space, eliminating the nuisance.
The craftswoman covers the finished product with a layer of varnish to fix the design, although it can be left in its original form. It is advisable not to overdo it with varnish to avoid the appearance of unsightly smudges and sagging.
The first acquaintance with dot painting of bottles is not always immediately pleasing with the result; it will take time to master the simple technique. It is recommended to start with the lightest patterns and choose no more than three colors for coloring. Gradually, skills will be developed, and exclusive kitchen utensils will appear in the house.
